    gearbox question

Happy New year one and all,

I have flashing lights on my gear selector, I also have no noise when the indicators are on, , everthing I have read suggested the battery was on the way out, so one expensive battery later, and everything is exactly the same, I have cleaned out the xyz sensor, it was pretty clean anyway, and I am now looking for other ideas.

I have select neutral message on the information centre but other than that and the flashing lights everything seems to work.

Anyone have any suggestions of what to check next?

On the basis of your battery theory, my first reaction would be to double check the earth points. Find their locations in the RAVE Electrical Troubleshooting Manual and give them all a good clean. Dodgy earth points can cause all sorts of gremlins to appear. If you haven't already done so I'd suggest you also check that the multiplug to the auto trans ECU (under passenger seat?) is fully engaged.
If you find the problem can you pls not forget to let us know and add to the collective knowledge

    Never seen this.

What about fuse 14? on the Becm fuse panel that puts your into transfer neutral? Check fuses.

Agree with Hoges. Also worth pulling and cleaning contacts on gearbox - they get a bit mucky too

I have recently had the gearbox out and took the opportunity to clean up everything, hence opening the xyz sensor and doing that to, still have high and low range and when in neutral the information center is quite happy, gear selection lights keep flashing though.

Will check the fuses and relay tomorrow but everything was fine at the last check so will also go hunting earth points and let you all know how it goes.

Thanks for all the suggestions, anything else anyone can think of will be gratefully received.

quick update and appeal for any more suggestions, all the fuses and relays have checked out fine, and I had a check under the passenger seat just to make sure the plugs into the gearbox computer were all still attached, and everything looks fine, will be climbing under to look at all the gearbox connections one more time before the Christmas break is over, but they all seem to be good.

am I now looking at a computer problem, I have read that the earlier ecu's are prone to overheating, and is it correct that a later model with improved cooling is a direct replacement?

thanks again for any and all help/suggestions

Yes you are correct , the later ecu is interchangeable and has an improved heat sync, Cheap from ebay uk. There should be several threads with more info

    Hello again learned people,

I hope carrying on with this thread is allowed, rather than starting a new one.

I have just changed the gearbox ecu for a new second hand one, and everything is still the same as before, still select neutral message on the dash, flashing selector lights and silent indicators.

Since the last post I have added earth wires to the gearbox and transfer ecu's and several to the gearbox itself just to be sure, still no change.

I have been wondering if there could be a problem with the computer not knowing the gearbox is in high or low range, as the owners manual says the select neutral message will result if the transmission is between ranges.

So can anyone tell me how the computer knows when it's in high or low range, my next idea is to confirm the motor is going all the way over.

Any other ideas will be very much appreciated.

Have seem similar before and it turned out to be a burnt out circuit in the transfer case ecu and also the hi low shift motor on the transfer semi burnt out on another although the motor would still select hi an low but not send the correct signals back to the transmission ecu. Hope this helps.
