Its has the same effect on ALL engines, just with EFI it will enrichen with fuel when cold...also optimum running temp is not necessarily thermostat temp in modern motors, its more for emmissions
Hi
My partners corolla was running very cool, so after some research we replaced the thermostat and now it is running at normal temps again.
What I learnt was that in modern EFI engines, the thermostat does much more than just provide a faster warmup, it actually controls the flow rate of the coolant to maintain the engine at optimum operating temperature.
So removing the thermostat is a big NO NO, and a faulty one can cause cool running which makes the ECU run the motor on a richer mixture which of course then chews fuel!
So another possible cause of high fuel consumption!

Thermostats don't control the engine temperature, they control the flow of coolant. A basic concept that many can't get their head around.
Actually they are part of a system of numerous things that control coolant temperature, they do not do it alone, but a faulty/missing one has a significant affect on coolant temperature, meaning they are most certainly partly responsible
Controlling flow is controlling temperature....by means of coolant flow![]()
however.
better to run without one than with one thats not opening
