Thread: P38 fumes in cabin

Haven't had it myself but is it when in motion or not moving?

Does your exhaust leak?

If not moving you may have one of the rubber bungs out below the rear lights (underneath). Although that goes into behind the rear lights so not sure how much would enter the cabin. Perhaps one of the wheel well metal plugs has come out. Can see these underneath. Then the more obvious one is the rear seal on the hatch.

All of the above is unlikely to come into the cabin but worth a look.

Thanks mate, I will have to look in the morning, it has gotten that bad I am physically ill from it. I don't believe that there are any bungs missing from the wheel well and the seal around the rear tailgate appears to be in good condition. I can notice the fumes while driving and while standing still.
Still, its a very nice vehicle though, a couple of small hitches like this won't put me off.

Thanks mate, I will probably have to get an exhaust specialist to look under the car for me, I had a heart attack at xmas and I am still recovering, just a bit hard to clamber around at the moment.

Is the sealing rubber at the back of the engine bay there?
If it was missing and you had a leak at the y pipe that'd do it.

Ahhhh the good ol Range Rover exhaust scent, lol. Wouldn't be a Rangie if you couldn't smell the exhaust.

Mine smells a bit too, but I'm sure it enters at the rear tailgate, more so when you're driving with a window open. But for whatever reason, it still keeps the majority of dust out so can't explain the logic of that one.

I don't think this old girl has ever seen a dirt road, there just doesn't seem to be dirt in the areas in the engine bay where it's impossible to clean, the mileage is pretty low and there are only the usual shopping bay scratches on it, not bush pinstriping. its a great car except for this damn exhaust smell.

Isn't there flaps in the rear tailgate to stop positive pressure? Or was that another car I had. Possibly they are stuck open. I might be making this bit up in my mind mind you.

You're not wrong about fumes getting in but no dust. Must be a very minor leak that doesn't allow dust particles. Although that red dust in the centre would make it through I reckon
