Hi guys
Once again I am in need of this great group to help me solve a p38 problem.
So the short story... After accelerating and taking my foot off the accelerator to coast the car is making a really loud metallic noise. ( sounds like something spinning and hitting something as it goes.)![]()
The long story... Not sure if any of this is connected... I have a few oil leaksbut nothing so bad that I am worried about it. I also have a slow (about a litre a month) coolant leak
. Back ground... After a bump off road my tracking was off and so I went to a small tyre place to get the wheels aligned. However I got back in the car and it was still pulling to the right so I went back and complained. After an argument they re-aligned the wheels and at last she steered straight. However ever since there has been a slight vibration through the steering wheel between 40-60kmh. And a slight tinny rattling when coasting.
Last week I took the car to tyre power for another wheel alignment after the vibration was getting worse and the noises getting distracting.
Whilst there they showed me under the car where the drivers side sway bar link has been badly bent and disconnected its self from the sway bar. Today I bought and fitted a new sway bar link expecting the car to sort her self out... Unfortunately the noise is still really bad and nothing has changed.
So in short again what could be causing this tinny noise. It sounds like it is coming from the front end. But as it does not do it when stationary I can't see where exactly it is coming from. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

Yes I guess so, I think I have been driving on the bent sway bar for a while.
It's hard to say if it is speed or movement related. Makes more noise cornering that's for sure. The only time it is quiet (relatively) is under acceleration.
Hmm I guess I'll be needing a new sway bar then.
FWIW, I'd check the following:
* Disc brake shields.. ensure there are no stones/gravel caught and that they are not loose;
* check integrity of both cats, light tap with a rubber hammer and see if you can hear anything loose inside... (they can sometimes rattle on overrun)
* check also the handbrake drum. when you are hearing the "tinny noise" carefully lift the handbrake a couple of mm at a time until it slightly tensions and see if the noise changes/stops
*Am presuming that your UJs are in good order and the flange bolts are all good and tight and that there's no slop in them?
* when you had the "bump" off road, is there any chance you hit the prop shaft guard and knocked it out of alignment so that it's rubbing?
These are the only things which come to mind at the moment... the significant bit seems to be that the noise is evident on coasting or over run ..so something is moving into contact when there's no 'driving force' which implies that it's just a matter of a mm or two of movement.. hmmm![]()

A shot C.V Joint will always sound worse whilst cornering.Get someone outside the car to listen whilst turning in a carpark
This may a bit off, but check the shock absorber bolts front and back. If you've lost a bolt it sometimes makes a metalic sound along with knocks, and could affect your steering.
I'd also check the shock absorber rubbers Top & bottom. but sounds more like a uni joint to me.

Thank you all for your replies. It was the uni joint on the front prop shaft.
I just wish I was not so time poor and I could have done it my self... Had to take it in and got both uni's done.
I still can't believe how much they charged. $370 and the price I was quoted from britparts was $35 per uni joint. To me that is far too expensive for a work shop to be charging seriously how long would it take? An hour per uni joint tops. Oh well just moaning.
There are four UJs.. 2 on each shaft. Were both shafts done? 4 x $35 is $140 plus labour. say 1.5 hrs at $150 or there abouts... $360 ...close. That's probably about right including time for a cup of coffee![]()
