Sorry forgot to mention its a 2000 HSE 4.6 with no issues driving and performance.
Hi all, I have coolant leaking onto the starter motor coming from somewhere above that. Looking from the top all is clean, heater hoses everything around coolant tank, radiator hoses etc. Reading many posts on forums it would appear that it leads to a failing head gasket.
Is there a way of checking and confirming?
Or (hopefully ) could it be something else?
Your help!! would be much appreciated.![]()

Probably the rear end of the head gasket. Not the hardest or most expensive job if you do it before you run low on coolant. Stop leak works too, just not a good long term solution as it tends to clog your radiator over time.
I have never tackled anything like this before, though I do have the tools and the place to attempt it....is it doable for a handy person ...I have a daily drive so time is not an issue.
It could be a core plug. Keithy has had core plug issues, maybe he will advise

Had a simular leak that ended up costing me a starter before I realised it was leaking from the welsh plug/freeze plug. Plug was rusted through but was an easy fix.
Thanks all I'll give it a go.
Yeah could be a welch plug. My originals were rusted out on the drivers side, so I replaced them. I did it with the engine in situ, and let me tell you it was hard. Brian (goanna_shire on the forum) came over and helped (he did most of the work lol).
I'm ripping my motor out in a fortnight to do the ones on the back of the motor.
I'd suggest that if one is leaking, it's possible there are more about to go too (which is what has happened to me). I'll be fitting aluminum ones as the brass ones I fitted have reacted to the red coolant I use and are weeping now (after 12months).
It's also a good time to tackle other jobs if you rip the motor out. I'll be doing my head gaskets, coil packs and all other engine gaskets purely as preventative maintenance.
Cheers
Keithy
Just thought I'd let you know I haven't had time to pull the top off the engine to have a look but I did put barsleak in and have had no issues over the last three months.......no coolant loss. I realise this is not permanent but could buy someone some time.........and thanks bee utey.
