    Engine surge

I have noticed sometimes, the engine seems to surge, not when driving but when idling.

Any ideas what this could be. Could it be clogged fuel filter, if it is, where is it and how do i change it.

The fuel filter should be just inside the chassis rail on the drivers side underside - roughly in line with the rear of the drivers door. Well worth changing regardless, if the car is new to you.

From what I've read elsewhere, it would also be worth cleaning the stepper motor.

It could also be your air conditioning compressor kicking in...just a thought

And remember that Thor motors don't have external fuel filters...

It does seem to do it when the auto air is on. How on earth do you turn it off. I know it has manual settings, but how do you turn the whole thing off, cant find anything in the book about on/off.

When your looking at the screen there is an aircon button on the right....the one above the button with the circular arrows....when you press it there is a light on top that comes on and off.....when you press and the light comes on the aircon is then off.....hope you understand this winded explanation.

As daf11e says to turn off the AC is correct. It's a bit strange, but just remember - the AC is OFF when the light in the top-right is ON. That doesn't make sense, does it?

Anyhow, I'm guessing from others' responses that you have a Thor motor (1999+)? If so, the stepper motor is called an idle air control valve in Bosch-speak and it can be found here (sorry for scribbling on your photo Paul):

Up close, it is this little part:

It's very simple to clean, just remove it from the engine and give it a good spray throughout with carburettor cleaner and give it a good shake in a twisting motion to make sure the valve inside moves freely.

D'oh, sorry! I saw Keithy's post and thought he was saying it was a Thor...

In that case, please ignore my last post! I can't find a really nice clear image showing the stepper motor and where it is. I'll go take one and redo my cleaning "guide" to suit.

I've been meaning to take some photos of the BMW expansion tank in place anyhow.
