    headlight high and low causing dramas

    Hi Guys, well on to the next few niceties on the repair list, EAS seams to be back in its box, I fitted a manual inflation kit, EAS computer and newer bush end of air pump with a solid secure bush in it...quieter than its ever been and all seams to be working well.My next thing is , I'm guessing my battery is on the way out as when i start her up i get abs fault or gearbox fault come up occasionally.It's on LPG and when plugs get over 10,000 i get the odd backfire...it happened the other day and destroyed what was left of my air box...bugger. It kept running but gearbox fault came up and she stayed in third i guess. I turned it off and on and no problem...drove ok. the other issue and its the biggest one, at night when driving and i turn on headlights, i sometimes here the beep and get a gearbox fault from that. yesterdy i had low beam on, no drama, then i went to high beam and again beep and it seamed the whole dash flickered, radio went off and on and then all came back but with gearbox fault. my question is would a dying battery cause all of this or might i have a bad earth , i have heard the headlight earth and radio earth are related?..any ideas would be great.

    Gas & back fire

    Hi, engines running on gas require a better spark that running on petrol hence the 10,000 on your plugs. Platinum plugs are used in some motors with 100,000 kilometre ranges, they are quite expensive but may save air boxes , plugs also are specifically made for gas powered engines, I'm not sure if the same goes for platinum.

    thanks Mike, yeah i have heard about hotter, colder, bigger gap smaller gap and platinum. I am a little confused by it all. i have run BPR6ES and 5ES plugs NGK for most of the time...i used to run them out of the box and had a lot of miss fires...My friend told me to close the gaps up a bit to about .8mm and problem seamed to go way, for last two or three tune ups , every 10,000 at least. After sitting around for months with EAS dramas it played up again. I would love to know if anyone has an air intake mod that might save buying new air boxes. I have had it tuned in the past and it ran worse when i got it back....it's done 300,000 k's so a little oily and brown on the plugs but as i said it was great for a year and a half. thanks for interest mate, I will enquire more about platinum plugs too.

    Bosch do a LPG specific plug that's suitable for the P38. Part number is WR7KI33S, the gap out of the box is 0.7mm. They work well for around 40,000km at least on LPG and petrol too. As a general guide LPG plugs are 1-2 heat ranges cooler spec than petrol only plugs and 30% reduced gap. 0.7 to 0.8mm is a common spec across a wide range of LPG tuned plugs.

    As for the air box, you need a steel cylinder air cleaner from an early model EFI Rangie 3.5, they aren't hard to adapt and handle backfires much better than the plastic lunch boxes that P38s come stock with. The steel cylinder is also used in early diesel Discos, see this pic:

    Thanks Bee utey, i guess thats why my other plugs were a bit better with the gaps closed up, i will look into those bosch ones too. i will be getting a steel intake and doing the mod, I'm on my third plastic one and it was broken when I bought the car originally.i will be scouting ebay and gumtree from today.

    Iridium plugs are recommended for LPG.
