Update:
Pump died due to flexplate breaking apart which allowed TC to have slop damaging a part they can't get in NZ and to bring in is $2000. Don't ask I don't know the part.
Good news sourced local transmission for $650 inc t. case so will have that as spare.
Bad news is will still cost $2500 to fit the replacement transmission inc their time to date to pull etc broken tranny. Could have been worse...?
Good news/bad news I guess. Hopefully the replacement transmission will give you good long service and the pain of haemorrhaging $$$$ from your wallet will become a distant memory as you enjoy the eccentric world of the P38! :D

UPDATE:
The transmission experts just called me. The trans they told me to buy they fitted and found it is a different length and squashes the torq conv... seems last 3 serial numbers or such different and didn't realise would be a problem. Another Landy outfit said the spacers might be different and a mod on the existing one might be possible. The experts are looking at freighting the replacement trans back for a refund. I told I am pretty ****** off and best I call back after I cool down. Otherwise it is back to square 1 with no replacement and no Rangie forseeable future. On the upside wife's new Disco 4 SDV6 is brilliant.

later 4.6s had a shorter torque convertor compared to the earlier cars.
Is it possible that this is your problem?
PS: I hadn't heard of this before. I knew the 4HP22 was shorter than the 4HP24 but I had no idea the convertors changed between 4.6s.
Yes mine is an '02 but I am hoping it is possible to modify... yes they must have changed, God only knows why. Mean if you have the later year you can't swap over a 4.6 trans from an earlier (pre-'99?) year. Not helpful.
there is a difference in length is between 4ltr and 4.6ltr transmissions. the 4ltr torque converter is shorter so they install a spacer on the crank.
No this is 4.6 onto 4.6.
The autoboxes are ID'd by the last digits of the second number down on the side ID plate, early ones with the big converter are the 061 and 064, later 4.6's had the same smaller converter as the 4.0 and were 065's
Do you know the numbers of the old and new? if you keep the converters with them you can interchange then if you also change the spacer between the starter ring gear and the flexplate
