    Bought a bargain P38, or have I

    Hi All,
I have got myself back into Land Rover ownership after purchasing a very cheap 99 Gems HSE tonight after the owner slashed the price quite considerably. Anyway as with most cars that are 15 years old it needs some work. The exterior seems very clean for its age but interior especially the front is a bit tatty and mechanically I reckons it needs new shocks and an oil leak addressed but I will see more in daylight tomorrow. I do have one query before I start searching the forum and that is when travelling at low speed forward or reverse while turning it feels like it wants to lock up a diff or viscous coupling, not sure what is the cause just yet, but don't notice it at speed. Anyway here is a pic after I fuelled her up

Mine didn't come with a chick in the passenger seat!

Jack up one corner and see if you can turn the wheel against the viscous coupling or if it is locked. I believe it will be stiff to turn - I've never tried it.

That's the Range Rover accessory that will keep you poor. Much more expensive to maintain than any P38 ever made.

The chick will keep me poor, it's actually my daughter, she was gutted at first that I bought a rangie instead of another D2. I am going to drop the rear diff oil in the next day or so as it seems to just be the rear wheels that are binding on turns

Take it to a car park somewhere and drive it slowly in a tight circle with the driver's window open... stick your head out the window and watch and listen ..if the rear or front wheels feel like they're binding or skipping due to transmission windup then it's fairly certain the VC in the transfer case is binding.

Then drop the front prop shaft and drive it around to check the difference. If the rear wheels were really binding because of a problem with the diff I suspect you'd feel and "hear" other problems.

There is plenty of info on replacing the VC yourself both here and on RANGEROVERS.NET HOME... good luck!

PS: Enlist daughter to assist as the " mechanic's help" ...great opportunity for father-daughter bonding and passing on mechanical skills ...been there...can guarantee it stays with them and comes in handy in years to come!!

Cheers all for the replies, I think you are on the money hoges, I have had window down while turning and it sounds like inside rear wheel is trying to skid/skip. Will start reading about VC

I think I may have seen you coming out of Ballarat today? If so I was coming in from Creswick in a dark green P38
