    Roof gutters?

    Hey everyone,

Seeing I haven't yet picked up my p38, and I can't zoom in far enough on the photos I have of it, I thought I'd ask..

Does the p38 have the old style guttering around the roof?
More specifically, can I fit gutter-mount roof racks?

No gutters, just two flat rail type strips along the roof front to back.....these have mount points in them...sorry don't know what they are actually called.

When you slide the cover back there is a channel in the roof. The channel has a metal "partition" running along its middle about 10mm high and 1-2mm thick. The roof rack mount is designed to "grip" the partition. The roof rack/bars etc then screw into the mount.
It never ceases to amaze me how some people will overload a pair of roof bars when all that's ultimately holding the whole lot to the (gutterless) roof are (usually) four 5mm screws!!

The cover strips pop out quite easily if you have roof rack where the spacing of the legs doesn't match the cut outs.

Mine is currently sans covers strips for that very reason.

I'm hoping to fit three crossbars, so with any luck the cut-outs should be fine.

Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck locating a set that isn't going to set me back over $600 (a brand new Rhino heavy duty set).

I had an offer made to me today, but they were gutter-mount, and seeing I now know that the p38 doesn't have gutters, they won't be suitable.

I'm all for a $100 set of bars, but I'll be carrying 75-ish kilos at all times, and possibly up to a hundred from time to time.

The Rhino three-bar set that I'm looking at is rated for 80 kilos, and is their heavy-duty offering.

Is there something out there with a higher carrying capacity? I'm not opposed to flat platforms, but I can't have a basket, as I'm putting on a rooftop tent.

These flat ones were rated for 80 at the time and can get a bit springy in the middle, I have always distributed the weight over the four corners.this is probably not going to be suitable for your purpose.I believe they do make a heavy duty but not sure of the price.......good luck

Damned if I can see the justification for charging $600+ for three lengths of extruded aluminium ...
