    Oil filter for P38 4.6

    Hi all, look i know my old girl is long in the tooth, 308,000kms. That said, I understand she may be a little loose, insert dodgy joke here. But I change her oil, plugs and filter every 10,000. This is a used motor I picked up, my first got to about now and let pressure into water...new heads on old unshaven heads most likely problem but cash strapped and need car for work. Anyway this engine , for the first 200,000kms of its life was serviced every 10,000 at a dealership in Melbourne, so the 60 to 70,000 between that and me is the only question, but ran well and no noises... till recently. I get a lot of tappet noise on start up and was wondering if its the oil or filter I'm using that might be letting it run out of the top of the engine more than before. I am using 20/50 oil and Ryco filter. I was told once about non return valves in some filters and been told only use genuine land rover ones too, my last engine did the same but had overheated twice and had piston slap in one cylinder not to mention a leak of compression into water so figured that engine was done. It was running 20/70 oil with thickener in it to try and get oil pressure before the end too. I realise I'm probably dreaming but , if you don't ask , you don't get.

    I use the Ryco Z89A filter and generally buy a couple at a time when they're on special wherever. Noisy tappets on start-up can be due to the leak down rate of the lifters. The 20w-50 grade should be OK, especially in sunny Qld! ... is it mineral oil or synthetic stuff?
    I'll probably get caned for this but a premium mineral oil is more than OK for old technology flat tappet engines...

    That's the same combination I use, although it's usually every 5000-7000 k

    Same here, I generally use the Castrol 20W-50 mineral oil for 'older engines' but if an equivalent is on special then I'll get that instead.

    I think that clean recently changed oil is much more important than some exotic oil grade or synthetic formulation so I change mine every 5,000km or 12 months.

    Thanks to all repliers, I am using mineral oil too, I had been told in the past the Rangie engines do not like synthetic. I need to rebuild the old engine and am hoping to top hat the sleeves and maybe try and up the compression from 8.5 ish to closer to 10. Don't have a lot of money so will be looking for a cheaper option. I am guessing my oil pressure is a bit low and the bearings are allowing the oil to fall..i have a pair of reco heads on the shelf so when i get my act together i will start the insanity. Glad to hear i'm doing the norm with oils etc, thanks again.
