    5th brake hose...who knew?

I changed my brake hoses today, they were the original ones, which would make them 14 years old.
I've read they should be changed every 6 years, so mine were way overdue.
It was a big task, the front ones were the hardest, requiring the inner guards to be removed. The brake bleeding process is something I'm not hoping to have to do again for a while, but it was all worth it, the brakes feel great now.
When I ordered the hoses from my very knowledgeable parts supplier, he mentioned there are 5 hoses on the P38, not 4.
I had never heard of this before, but sure enough, hidden up above the passenger side rear wheel well, is a short brake hose.
Was in a tough spot too, not an easy one to replace, but the original one on there was looking very old and past its best, something that could let go at the worst possible moment.
I've noticed P38 hose kits on ebay only having 4 hoses, so I'm not sure if this 5th hose is on all P38's or just the later models. (Mine is a 2001).
Anyway, something to be aware of if you are thinking of changing your hoses.
    Cheers, Pete.

I have a 96 Gems with 5 hoses. When I got the replacements I thought 5 was a packing error, but not so.

There are many cars out there that would have hoses double this. My D1 is nearly 19 years old and still has the original hoses.

With all these cars out there you never hear of any brake failures due to burst hoses.

When I was active as a spanner it was common practice when a car was being serviced to check the hoses for cracking, deterioration, hardness etc.

Having said this, please don't take it he wrong way. I am not knocking what you have done, just passing comment.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Im a Mechanic by trade although 25 years ago, I also never heard of a brake hose failure, until last year. My 07 tdv8 lhf hose split, then one year later (1 month ago) my rhf brake hose split. Both instances resulting in 0 brakes. Fortunately I was not moving fast either time. googled around and could only find one other instance.

My attitude is to replace the hoses when I get around to it and keep the originals as spares as long as they look OK

I replaced mine because the rhf one split. Fortunately it happened in my drive but it gave me a big shock as 30 minutes earlier my wife and young daughter had been out in it shopping.

New brake pipes = cheap insurance
