Buggered alternator, battery goes flat, do the rest of the electrics work?
My 4.6 has been running very well for some time but today, it developed a small miss, like a crook plug lead or something.
On the homeward trip I had a couple of climbs around 2 k's each.
As power was down a bit I used third gear and around 3000rpm and while the first one went fine, towards the top of the second without warning the engine died. No warning, no noise, no overheating.
Afterwards the engine would not crank over and it didn't sound like the starter motor was trying to crank it.
Any thoughts??
John

Hi mate have you got a multimeter?. First port of call is battery voltage.
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Battery lead could be loose too...
If you had "gearbox fault" up first on the dash it'll be alternator or battery dead.
Cheers

X2 for the battery, that's what mine turned out to be, wish I'd have known that when I started getting the gearbox fault.
The day after I bought my P38, I went out the first morning to start her up and instead got all sorts of error messages showing up, would not crank over let alone start.
As you could imagine I was not very impressed.
My mechanical instinct kicked in and I thought, better check the battery first.
Once I got the battery cover off, I found the battery terminals were covered in corrosion, in a very bad state, thanks to the prevoius owners neglect.
I cleaned them up, reconnected and bam, started straight away!
P38's need a good solid battery to run, a low battery can cause all sorts of weird error messages when you try to start the engine.
The fuel injection system needs good volatge to do it's thing properly, which may explain the miss and lack of power you experienced.
This would be a good starting point for sure.
Let us know if you have any luck with it.
Cheers, Pete.
Hi all, definitly not the battery, lots of juice in there. JC pulled a relay from the fuse box and hot wired the sockets and it spun over nicely. Turned the ignition on but it wouldn't start as it had no spark.
Hopefully JC can get a look at it shortly.

Crank Position Sensor !
Steve
Yep I agree with Steve. If the battery checks out it'll be the crank position sensor.
Cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong guys but a faulty CPS still cranks over but does not start. IMHO I feel it would be more likely the starter relay, fuse box or one of the big fuses. Parasnooper, are you getting any messages come up on the console? Also are there any other parts of the car not currently working?
