Change the fuel injection to carbi

    Hi,
I have a friend who's interested in changing the 4lt engine from injection to carbi.

As far as my knowledge the block is the same as the early 3.5 or 3.9 lt blocks of the buick in the previous range rover.

We after information on hiw its done and whats required to complete the transfer.
    Thanks in advanced.

Hi jason it is not a legal conversion. At all. Out of interest why does he want to do this??? In a disco 2 or p38a neither of these can be converted to carb as the bosch fuel injection computer (and GEMS in the earlier p38a ) also run ignition systems and can't be 'disconnected ' .

    Hi justin,

Just making inquiries on he's behalf. He was given this type of motor with no wiring loom to connect up to.

    Thanks for reply.

If it's just the motor you're converting, then you will need all the relevant parts off an earlier model motor to make it run without a computer.

    sump
    oil pickup
    front timing cover and pulleys
crank spacer to suit early pulley on late model crank
    camshaft and timing chain set
    distributor
    inlet manifold and carby

Basically you're quicker getting a complete early model motor with all the parts. A 3.9 EFI is the same capacity and only needs the inlet manifold and carby changed to run.

And then there's the good chance that a 4.0 motor is free because its got a cracked block, the most common fault that makes people throw out their 4.0's.

The other option is to run an after market ECU, I have a 4.6 in a MY85 and the engine runs on a Motec (programable) ECU, other brands like Haltech are good and I understand cheaper.

For carby options, rather than the OEM twin CDI manifold, you can always go with an Edelbrock Buick 215 manifold which gives you more carby options. Intake Manifolds - Buick - V8 - Performer Series - Edelbrock, LLC.

The one problem you may find is space under the bonnet.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
