Some possible causes which have been mentioned

    1) we have seen pinhole failures in coolant hoses start a fire

    2) My MY99 I suspected a fuel fire caused by a faulty pressure valve in the fuel system

    3) on rr.net people have pointed to the high pressure brake hose which runs from the pump to the master cylinder

    4) There have been a few fires in fuseboxes

There may be more as well

    5) Another tip from the P38 FB page by Steven Libstaff

Decaying oil cooler lines leak oil onto the exhaust system and it drips on and coats the cats where it ignites. All new oil lines in mine.

Replacing o-ring on transmission oil pressure line

    Steve,

regarding you replacing your oil lines - which I presume were your transmission oil lines if they were leaking onto the cats - can you tell me how you replaced the pressure line o-ring on the top of the transmission case.

My gearbox is a ZF 4HP24 and it looks impossible to remove the line and o-ring, without lowering/dropping the rear mount - or all mounts including the engine ones - and support the lot while I replace the o-ring. It seems a risky business unless there's an easier method, through the top of the selector panel?

I replaced my return line o-ring earlier when I was flushing the whole transmission cooling system, as well as the two others on the engine sytem. Cheers,

    Gary.

    Hi Mate

It wasn't me who replaced my oil lines, that was part of the quote from a guy on FB. My transmission oil lines seem to be in pretty good shape, but I am certainly going to keep an eye on them !

Someone on here will be able to answer your question I am sure

    Steve
