Yes, the Z9 fits (as does the shorter but much more expensive Z89A).
There have been comments made about the front axle hitting the filter on full articulation but I don't know anyone who has actually seen it happen.
Any one ever sussed out oil filters for the 4.6 P38.
I've just changed oil and used a Z9 that is common on Fords.
Much measuring of threads and seal rings etc, but it seems the only difference is longer filter allowing an extra half litre of oil capacity.
Thoughts appreciated
Thanks
Jeff

Ron,
Thanks for the reply.
I did drop the car right down onto the bump stops and there was still 2 inches of clearance between the lowest end of the filter and the track rod which crosses nearby, so think it will never get hit by anything?
Cheers
Jeff
Remember that the bump stops can be completely flattened by a big bump and the engine mounts could flex down a considerable amount.
I haven't really looked at the setup in a 38A but why would you want to go away from the recommended size.
I have seen a Z9 dented on a RRC, and there are others on the is forum who have too.
It just seems to me to be an unnecessary gamble when you consider the cost if it did hit.

Phillip,
My P38 is a ROAD ONLY vehicle.
It is used for towing our two tonne trailable yacht.
Biggest rock it will ever see is at roundabouts taking a wide swing to get 31 feet of trailer around the mongrel things.
So for mine, the extra half litre of oil is a little more cooling capacity.
I am actually serious about twin remote mounted oil filters for extra cooling.
And I reckon if the engine mount allowed the motor that far forwards and down then I'm in some serious **** with fan and other bits colliding
Cheers
Jeff
When a P38A goes down onto the bump stops, they compress almost flat - ask me how I know.

Same here Ron.
I pulled the air lines to see.
I expected them to sit up an inch or so, but they were squashed so flat that
I thought I had been ripped off by cheap foam imitations.
Once on the stops I reckon there is ZERO further travel so I can see why one would have a rough ride home with no air..................
Regards and Thanks
Jeff
This is why I am interested in extra cooling oil..........
It does fit, but the bypass valve and anti drain are different rates. The Z9 depending on what brand you buy dont state bypass pressures and I can tell you they all differ from maker to maker, particularly cheap ChingWah and Taiwanese made rubbish.
Best bet is to check the Mann+Hummel website. Think the number is a W930/20. There are a lot of variations on the W930 number, all with different bypass rates.
I looked at this for the Classic, but really found no benefit from it. At the end of the day, its the quality of the filter paper used that makes the difference and having the correct bypass rate. And unless you are a decendent of Ebenezer Scrooge, why should a couple of dollars every few months be a drama when doing an oil change???
