    Roof capacity for rack

Anyone know the capacity of the roof RR HSE 96?

I want to put a rack system to hold a tinnie 80kg plus rack. I have Rola sports bars by three which will have to go an alternative is rhino racks but they are only rated to 80kg. Looks like i might need to make something out of steel with rollers but worried if the roof could hold say 90-100kg using the existing channel brackets that the Rola racks screw into ?

    Cheers,
    Remy

I am fairly sure i read in the owners manual 75kg is the max roof load.

What tolerance level do you think they build into their specs?
boat 79kg + rack - i am not going to be to much over!

You have seen a few smashed ones in your time is it the roof that is weak (only 75kg) or the mounting points?

Any suggestions for spreading the load with this type of system ?

Anyone attempted something similar on RR HSE or similar track type systems.

    Cheers,
    Remy

If the load is spread over the 3 racks i dont see any problem with putting 100kg up there, i would not push it too far though. I have noticed that p38 feel alot softer than discos (mabe it is just me), but they seem to crumple easier.

Just remember wind drag though, the faster you drive, the more the wind will try to pull the boat off your roof, so take it easy.

Thanks Andy - That is what i was thinking. Unless i find something suitable i might have to get this rack made. Ron is getting me pics of his roof rack fittings which should help.

The problem is a physics one of how much that 75kg becomes in an accident...

If you have an accident your stuffed regardless of the 75kgs on your roof.

I recently replaced the roof lining in my 1999P38. While the shell was removed I had a good look at the underside for the very reasons you made this post...I am not convinced that the RR roof is designed for loads in excess of those recommended. The mounting rail for the roof racks is minimal.

RR.net has some info including a photo of a P38 on a car ferry where some bloke was carting building materials to Morrocco...supposedly had 400kg on the roof ! Hard to say...

Last week I ventured home from Sydney to Bris. via Bathurst /Sofala/Kandos Tamworth etc then the Mt Lindsay Hwy from Tenterfield. I carried a spare tyre and a couple of bags in a Thule wire basket mounted on twin Rino "sportz" bars. I was quickly reminded how much "moment" is generated by 40k -50 kg 2m from the ground ...future bends taken quite slowly in comparison to no load conditions...

Where feasible was trying to maintain a steady 90-95 kmh, (av speed 71 kmh for whole trip) fuel consumption was 13.6L/100km overall for a 3,200km return trip...

G'day Hoges - the winding road from Bathurst to Kandos via Sofala is an "interesting" drive in a P38A even without a load on top.

Good fuel economy figure though. In December, I got about 14-15L/100Km driving from Coolum to Canberra which was mostly motorway driving, with roof racks, basket and back of the car full of spare bits.

    cheers
    Paul.

Ah ha! so you got THAT Rangie...I visited Hardy back in Sep 07 when I bought a Faultmate from him...a most impressive vehicle ...as I recall it had enough pneumatics under the rear floor to inflate the Hindenburg!

Was many years in Cbr - and spent a few days there 2 weeks ago...will admit to a small bout of nostalgia gazing out towards the Brindabellas...a leisurely trip from Cbr to Adaminaby thru the Brindies in winter is on my wish list!
