    Smile Costs of a 2000 HSE Model

    I was thinking of buying one of these i quite like them. i currently own a 1989 rangy with a 5-spd man but i think its a bit long in the tooth. The best thing about the one i currently own is the parts a relatively cheap as with servicing costs. The fuel consumption isn't fantastic but its not bad (i haven't got a LPG conversion). First of all i'd like to get an idea of what the HSE would cost to run ie. the fuel (with/without LPG conversion) and the servicing/parts. if anyone has got any info/tips about these things from personal experience or otherwise it would be greatly appreciated.

    It depends on what one you get. I am currently in the buisness of selling p38 spare parts, and i like to have a chat with customers about their cars. Some owners tell me that they spend on average 10K a year in repairs, where others say they just have the basic services done and nothing else goes wrong. One thing with pretty much all P38 owners though, and thats that they are a passionate bunch, and every one of them loves their car (for some its a bit of love hate though).

    The 99-01 HSE model got slightly better trim - chrome door handles etc and side SRS, aswell as a better brake master cylinder, and a better motor than the earlier ones, and is regarded as the pick of the P38s, only bettered by the rare P38 Vouge.

    Beware of a black 2000 HSE for sale with about 185 on the clock, one like this went through the damage auctions recently.

    Totally agree with Andy

    Buy wisely, most P38 00-01 4.6 were HSE I believe.
    Have it checked really well by LR mech.
    Make sure everything works as it should and running costs as in fuel is probably the least of your expenses.
    When I was looking for one they ranged from 12k to 35k depending on condition and how illutional the owner is.
    I loved the ride and the air suspension its addictive but when we were locked out of one on our test drive, I remembered to go home take two panadols and if symptoms persist talk to your mechanic.

    IMHO, the two biggest problems with the P38's are:

    1. Cracked Block/Slipped liner - Engine block cracks behind the steel cylinder liner and allows liner to move, and sometimes coolant to enter the cylinder. Do a search on here. BTW the engines are the same all through the model 95-2002 but wih differences, such as Injection system, inlet manifold and compression ratio, 8.37:1 - 1995-1998 and 9.35:1 1999-2002.

    2. EAS Problems - Usually leaking Airbags, worn compressors or valve blocks. With the info available nowadays, this can often be relatively cheap to repair. You can even download free software that allows you to plug your PC/PDA into the car to check for faults and adjust settings.

    AULRO and Range Rovers are your two biggest friends with a P38. There are many people out there who are willing to help. I'm just in the process of getting a new motor for my 97 HSE. They are a bloody nice car to drive, and even though mine cracked the block, for some reason I still don't hold a grudge against it.

    It cannot be stressed enough that you can't get behind on the maintenance of these cars, otherwise they will start to cost money.

    It looks good but it's been dressed up to look like a 2000 model with the clear indicators. It's actually a 1999 model.

    Good spot, I was looking at the driving lights which looked a bit scruffy, compared to the 2000+ ones. But the headlights don't have the black inserts inside them.

    Nothing really, it's just that the seller is making a point about it being a 'clear lens' model when it actually isn't.

    I would be thinking 'what else is he covering up' but maybe that's just me.

    I have heard on the grapevine, that the 1999 ones can be a bit troublesome, due to the changeover period to the BOSCH engine electronics. The whole wiring of the car was also revised. I know we're getting a bit symantic here, but you asked what we thought.

    Now that i'm doing my motor, i'm actually quite glad that I got a GEMS (pre 98) car, as the Engine ECU can be programmed more easily from what I've been told. I think they are all very similar.

    The later ones have a few extra bits, such as:

    Leather Door Trim
    360Watt 11 speaker sound system (compared to 260 of pre1999)
    Some had auto-dimming wing mirrors
    Little more noise insulation
    They look better
    Bosch Engine Management (more efficient and smoother, but harder to work on)
