    P38A Owner (Max) in Devonport?

I had a call from a chap called Max in Devonport today seeking some help with his P38A.

He was supposed to email me so I could respond but I haven't seen an email from him.

    Was it anyone on here?

Max's P38A was in Launceston for work. He'd had one of Russell Botha's brake modulator kits fitted and after fitting his brake lights are on all the time.

oops !. that's actually on my 'to do' list for later in the year. i'd be interested to know the condition of the unit when pulled apart and the mileage of his vehicle

Hi Ron, he rang me too as i have sold him some parts in the past. He had one of those stainless washer kits put through his brake modulator, and now his brake lights wont go off. He doesnt think that its the modulator, as they are still on when it is unplugged.

He has a fair idea, as he is an auto-electrician, and seems to think it is the BECM. I have a becm that i can send him, but he doesnt know what needs to be reset when the it is changed over, and he doesnt have local access to a testbook. I told him to give justin cooper a ring to see what he thinks, as it may not be the becm at all.

BTW, can you change the BECM without the plugging it into test book?

if you would like his number, give me a call.

He said that his brake light switch has only two wires, not three. Would this be correct? I don't know if some model P38A had only two wires (I think his is a '96). I need someone with the covers removed under the fascia of a P38A to have a look - otherwise I have to pull all the covers off mine.

Surely he hasn't plugged something else onto the brake switch?

Swapping the BECM requires other work as the lockset number has to match the BECM. I recall Scouse saying that when a lockset was changed, they sent the BECM away to Land Rover Australia to get it programmed.

i cant remember any brake light switches under the dash, only the cruise control switches. I thought the brake light switch was in the valveblock?

Hmm, now you've got me worried! The workshop manual connector views shows it near the brake pedal.

had a look today, a switch that i always thought was for the cruise control is actually for the brake light. It might be for them both, and thats what the 3rd wire is ?

I just had an email from Max. It seems the mechanic confused the cruise control switch (2 wires) with the brake switch (3 wires).
