    rear tailgate p38

Ok so yesterday loaded the car with lots of heavy things closed the tailgate. Went for a drive and now the tailgate bottom won't open. So removed heavy stuff - dislodged right hip, left knee and cracked head several times - only joking.

Press the button once and it unlocks the top. Press it again twice and it previously unlocked the bottom. It still sounds like the electronics are working. I can here the mechanism when i press the button and it obviously opens the top.

Any ideas? where do i start? Take the inside cover off the tailgate? Will that give me access to the mechanism so i can see what is happening? Has anyone had this problem before. I love some of the electronics on the P38 but why on a boot lock - ahhhhhhhh
    Cheers,
    Remy

After a day spent putting on bilsteins which involved having to undo the injected gas computer, mixer and piping and other bits which were placed nicely in front of the suspension bolts front and rear LHS and a lot of cursing for not putting these on before the gas - looks like i have another job!!!!.

    Cheers,
    Remy

if the top tailgate is opening, you can slip a 10mm spanner up the gap on the sides and unbolt the latches.

You wont get the tailgate tim off as the plastic RANGE ROVER spring flap is in the way, and this can only be removed with the tailgate open!

It could be one of several plastic clips come off. Once you get the lower tailgate open, remove the carpet liner (turn the plastic screws 1/2 a turn and pull the carpet trim down/towards the car) then you can see the mechanism and whats going on. There are 2 long rods connected to a middle latch which is controlled by a solonoid.
