    Rebuild Leftovers (and Wish List?)

    Hello there! First posting so I can handle a **** taking if its the usual deal!

    This weekend I will be very happily picking up my reco'd P38 4.6 (new short motor, reco heads, new filters/gaskets/fluids, and ZF also fully serviced).

    She's been off the road for about a year so... YIPPEEEE!!!

    As a result I will also be getting the old short motor back with it. It's not completely stuffed, so any ideas on the best way of getting a fair dollar for these left overs (assuming this is possible)?

    I am also after advice on:
    - where to get bash plates/armour to protect the belly of my P38;
    - where to source EAS lift kits (heard of 50mm lifting blocks);
    - what's the easiest and cheapest EAS emergency overide available (one that can go on before the emergency occurs!);
    - how to make a P38 swim as well as a snorkeled 80 series cruiser!
    - best place for cheap but good replacement door rubbers;
    - any suggestions regards looking after a "fresh" 4.6;
    - thoughts on any other components that might get upset because they are not so "fresh".

    Hope that's not too much for my "virgin" posting!!!

    Lots of Love!

    Thanks for that will have a go next... have also just recently seen pic's of a few units in this forum with nice slim, high front bars and chunky looking alloy bash plates. Any idea where they might come from? Who I could chase suppliers with? Newby Dave & "the pig"

    Speak with Andrew e on this forum. He wrecks a few and will look after you. He has a EAS bypass kit on ebay and lots of other stuff.

    Range Rover P38 Permanently fitted EAS bypass kit - eBay Other Suspension, Steering, Suspension, Steering, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 23-Jun-09 10:14:05 AEST)

    No leftovers & I forgot what that SPORT button does!

    Picked up my fresh, sweet, darling today... the only down side (or is that really up, not sure yet) is that there are actually no left overs, apparently the BRAND NEW short motor that I paid the dealer for also requires the old one to go back?!? Which is OK if I was expecting it as a reco change over or something... thoughts anyone?

    After picking her up, we just started cruising and didn't stop for about 5 hours. Spending the last year driving sedans (and mrs LC 100 series) had made me forget what the ride was like and what that SPORT BUTTON actually does when played with! Anyway, we then actually headed home and I gave her the big clean out and sponge bath... aah the old feelings are all flooding back!

    I hope this lasts for a while... today the world is a wonderful place!!

    Don't know anyone locally in Oz (yet) but I reckon there's a bit of a market for this in short production runs. There are a couple of mobs in the US who do them (Safety Devices I think is one... check RangeRovers.net for others). If anyone knows a fabricator who is willing to do a run (Andy?), perhaps a few of us could pool together to make it worth their while? I'm up for a bash plate/steering guard and side sliders.

    Hard Range do a 50mm lift kit that lets you retain your EAS. Have it on my Rangie.

    as Remy said, speak with "andrew e" on this forum or look up "son_of_bundalene" on eBay. I have a EAS emergency bypass kit from the UK, but intend to swap over to Andy's kit as it has the extra valve to inflate the tank directly.

    Tow it behind the LC on a float?
    Bit of a sore point... at least 2 of us have drowned our P38A's in river crossings.
    I know someone who is seriously looking at making a snorkel for the P38A. I'm sure he will tell us if/when it is ready for purchase.

    maybe "andrew e" again, or some of the UK Rangie sellers such as p38spares.co.uk

    Nope, other than taking it back to the mechanic after a 1,000Km to get the oil changed to drain any leftover bits of metal. Other than that when I had my 4.6 rebuilt a few years ago, I just drove it as normal.

    Obvious thing is to keep an eye on downstream driveline components such as transmission, transfer case, shafts etc. I'm sure they'll let you know if they're feeling left out.

    cheers

    That's the case if they fitted a factory exchange engine but not if it was a new one.
    What's the part number of the engine that was fitted?

    Part Number

    Part number on the official land rover receipt is:

    STC1892E

    INTERESTING NOTE: The story at the time was that I was getting one of the very last units "on hand" before manufacture and supply shifted from UK to RSA. The price was supposedly a one off clearance price ($3,500-), and there were hints that perhaps that was going to increase somewhat. Would not have a clue if it actually has, but am curious to know if anyone can confirm any of this...

    In hind sight, if the above is all kosher, I've been thinking maybe I would have preferred to get one made in RSA given they might "tweak" for heat to try and avoid things like slipping sleeves?!? Who knows though really... and well its all moot for me now anyway!

    The 'E' indicates you've had an exchange engine fitted.

    VERY INTERESTING!!!

    So do you think it would be likely that the rest of the story was a big load of horse @%$? I would not be surprised...

    The dealership I use (when I have to) has always made me suspicious that they have some sort of a "creative" approach to pricing... I guess its a case of caveat emptor and I just gotta do more research and quoting before spending... but seriously this brand doesn't have very supportive or welcoming arms... unless they are wrapped around you picking your pocket at the same time!
    Classic example: I recently paid $6 for 2 O ring's that were half the size of a 5 cent piece... in reasonable volumes, you can buy baseball hats from china for under $2 landed, and honestly these rings really only gotta be worth about 20-30c to make (tops)... any wonder there is always employees sitting round in suits whenever I go in there! The margins they maintain can cover a few extra shiny bums!
