    of course its overpriced!

its not for drinking for gods sake,(I dont drink wine but the one I had was delicious)

Its to impress other wine buffs, and to sell in ten years at a tidy profit.

Penfolds Grange 1.5L MAGNUM 1995 The 1995 Grange is the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag for the Australian wine industry. Fruit from the Barossa and the McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. "An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin!" -eRobertParker.com
    Barossa McLaren Adelaide Padthaway

Grange’s weight and concentration can be traced to rigorous selection of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes from mature vines in some of South Australia’s finest vineyards. The quantity of Grange made each year is determined by the availability of grapes of the required quality and style. Penfolds reduce the impact of vintage variation to the point where experts the world over consider Grange to be among the most consistent of the world’s great wines. Despite a difficult vintage, rigorous selection of intensely flavoured grapes from mature vines in some of the finest vineyards produced a wine that exceeded vintage expectations. Maturation for seventeen months in 100% cent new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 13.5% Winemaker comments by John Duval: Deep red. Complex with masses of concentrated plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit aromas and hints of leather, dark chocolate and spice. Displaying all the classic hallmarks one would expect of Grange, this is a full-bodied, richly flavoured wine with ripe, dark stewed fruits and mixed spices with seamless, perfectly integrated oak and chewy tannin

Well, I never knew that! Does that mean I wasted my money on the one I drank?

We bought it from Woolworths during a clearance sale. It was marked down by about $80. Then we added it to 5 bottles of quaffing wine to get the 20% discount for buying 6 bottles of red.

Nothing but the best for us Westies!

    I just checked, it's a '99. I think the bottle we drank was a '95.

I can't easily access my spare wheel cover, because I've got dickie seats installed over the top of it. Not that it matters anyway, because the LPG tank is where the spare wheel was. I am currently building a spare wheel carrier on the back of the car.

For a picnic table we use an aluminium roll up table which packs into a bag that is approx 70 cm long and 10 cm x 10 cm wide and high. About $20 from Ray's Outdoors a few years back.

I have had several different years of Grange from a 1969, to a mid seventies and an early nineties from memory.

It is a great drop but it is not the be all and end all. It has become iconic and certainly represents a good investment, I think partly due to the "legend" it has become.

I think its sad in a way that it has become "undrinkable" because of its value. Surely the purpose of wine is to enjoy it for what it is, not to hide the bottle underground.

There are other beautiful Aussie reds in the same league that do not share quite the same fame.
