4.0 engine vs 4.6
Sunroof standard on HSE
7" wheels vs 8"
Some different electrics/trim.
Not sure if the SE has traction control. HSE does.
Probably more that I can't remember.
Am looking at a used 98 MODEL SE but what is the difference between the SE and HSE ?? Is it just cosmetic. RGrds

Does SE have climate control and therefore the same potential blend motor problem as HSE or is it just a basic [trouble freee?] manual operated Heating/Air Conditioning system?
I believe my 99 4.0 is same/similar spec to 98 SE, and have previously had a '95 HSE. Observation of differences so far...
HSE vs SE (or 4.0)
- 4.6L V8 vs 4.0 V8 (not a huge amount of power or fuel economy difference IMHO)
- leather memory seats vs cloth manual seats (leather was an option though)
- sunroof vs none
- headlight washer wipers on HSE vs none
- fog/driving lights on HSE vs none
- vanity mirror with light on HSE vs no light
- cruise and stereo controls on steering wheel vs cruise only
- a bit more fake wood on the dash on HSE
- CD stacker and subwoofer in cargo area vs none
- something about the side trim on HSE? more rubber moulding?
- 18" alloys vs 16" alloys
The only one of these that I really miss is the leather memory seats, but I have a cunning plan...
Another couple of things worth noting is that the engine management changed from Sagem "GEMS" (95-98) to Bosch "Thor" (99-02), and rear wheels only Traction Control (95-98) to four wheel TC (99-02).
Cheers, Paul.

just quickly, 95/96 se's had traction control as option here ,wasent std , my jan 96 build has not got it .after 97ish was std on wards ,rear only . my se does have headlight washers , the 99 s model ,the budget one they were selling cheap to get rid of 4L /lucas motors , to make way for bosch powered motors they didnt have headlight washers along with other std features .my se does have rear cd stacker on pass side cargo area .my se does have cruz control with radio ,cassette ,cd ect vol /change ch /and mode buttons ect on the weel .and as for blend motor problems ,my se has a non working hot air flow on passenger side, only has cold /on drivers side has both hot and cold .to fix just with finger close dash vent to even climate you want ,or expensive option change blend motor on pass side ,well i can live with it .oh yes one more ,se does have climate control (digital read out on mine ,fully auto setting ect ect ;hope this answers your questions .and while here my se 4 LT motor yet to slip linner or do head gasket just in case you ask later ,cheers.
just a foot note ,was going of my memory this morning ,the run out one in 99 was with lucas injection was called just 4.0 / the 4.0 S also was 99 year lucas but had upgraded 18 inch mondial wheels from 96/98 4.6 HSE on it .the new 1999 SE had new bosch injection with 16 inch /5 spoke wheels. was 1/2 right above on first line , now corrected ,cheers
Thanks everyone for your valued inputs. The final decision was to go with the HSE , The additional creature comforts pushed it over the line so I guess you will be hearing a lot more from me over the next few months. Rgrds
