    o-rings fun - not!

So I've followed the instructions on rangerovers.net to get to the heater o-rings, and got this far...

Not sure if someone has had a go at the o-ring clamp phillips head screw before or if I've damaged it, but it's not wanting to budge.

I've sprayed a bit of WD-40 on it and will leave it for a day or so. It is a standard phillips head isn't it?

Has anyone had any joy using "valve grinding compound" as described at rangerovers.net, or other methods to loosen these hard to get at screws?

    thanks
    Paul.

Oh isn't it a lovely job? NOT!

I know what you mean Paul. Its a right pain in the ...

The valve grinding compound merely adds friction. It works, if you happen to have any. But try tightening the screw first. This can break the seal and if you slip it doesn't wreck the loosening side if the the screw slot.

It is a standard Philips head screw.

A tip - take the hoses in the engine bay off before you undo the screw. You'll be so glad you did ...

Otherwise its just persistence. And more persistence. And more persistence! AARRGGHH! But when you get to take the old O rings off you will know why you are doing it.

    Paul,

I'll give you a yell later, I might have some "screw grab", it's a military spec compound, like valve grinding paste, but designed to aid removing screws.

Hi Willem - is that because of cooolant in the pipes, or some other reason such as ability to move the pipes around?
    Cheers, Paul.

Think I've stuffed the screw head. Not a lot of choice now but to remove more of the dash to get better access at the head.
Will try removing the HVAC control, stereo and centre fascia in the morning.
If that doesn't work, looks like the whole dash fascia is going to have to come out

Paul ... When you apply pressure to the driver to turn the screw ... does the clamp flex (move down) by any chance .... If so ... can you get a bar behind the clamp, so that you have something solid to push the clamp onto, to stop the flexing of the clamp / screw ...

Also ... do you have a can of "Freeze Spray" handy

Hi Mike - nah, the clamp is solid - no flex at all. I got a long handle screwdriver (250mm Stanley 2pt... no 450mm ones at Bunnings this arvo) on to it. I get a bit of purchase if I try to turn clockwise, but only a little bit of resistance then slips turning anti-clockwise.

does not bode well for me.... oh well, these things are sent to test us

Well given that you can get some sort of movement .... Put that "SupaG" on the tip that screwdriver and hold it in place for 5mins ...
push down hard as and give it 1 more go ...... (You have to hold the driver in place / steady all the while)

After that, if you so desire, I will send you my gas-axe & 9" angle grinder

    been glued?

Tried a couple of more things today involving superglue on the tip of the screwdriver... no good, and then decided it was time to remove the dash fascia

Got a better look at the screw head once the dash was out of the way...

I reckon it's been glued in before, which might explain why it's so damn difficult to remove.

If only I could get a hack saw in to that really tight spot to cut a cross-head on it... but even with the dash fascia off and the heater/air pipe out of the way, there is no room to move a blade across the head.

Think my only option now is to drill out the head and hope that the screw extractor I got today does the trick.

All this for a couple of lousy $2 o-rings!!

    Cheers, Paul.
