Nice build up, mate. I look forward to seeing how it turns out, having owned both a Daihatsu F10 and an Applause. It may be worth keeping in mind that the Daihatsu Feroza runs a version of the Applause motor in a North-South configuration.
Just an idea for something completely different.
You can run a massive alternator off the motor, then couple the transfercase to an very torquey electric motor. That way there is no gearbox and no interfaces (ie clutch, gearbox , transfercase to mate up). An electric motor will give you very quick acceleration as well as very low speed, which may also save on lower rock crawling gear conversions. Run a bank of batteries for some reserve.
There was a series Land Rover set up like this in the USA, and there was a Discovery Channel episode on it.
i bought 2 of these today now just got to wait for them to rock up
