Wow it took you all day to get to this point?
Hey all,
I started building my rear bar today, i havn't done a whole lot just yet as i'm still tossing up with idea's on how to make it look, particularly the ends.
I originally started off thinking i was going to do something "slunnie" based so i bought most of the materials associated in doing so but then had a bit of a play around with the bar being flat along the back rather than bending outwards sort of like the original plastic bar.
Anyway here's some pics of where it's at...
This is where I am most undecided. I know I want to cut off the lower black plastic and the body behind it at the bottom of the quarter panel and run a bar down there in it's place, and then into the chassis, I know it would probably be easier to cut it a bit higher and do this and it will make it easier to shape the edge but i'm not too keen on cutting up the quarter that much as i prefer the original look of the quarter panels...
Anyway, any pics or idea's that could aid me here? I have been looking at a hell of alot of bars on the forum but still am undecided haha...
Cheers,
Shamo

exo cage man haha
Hi Shamo
Looks good so far. How are you going to fix it to the chassis. I see that Kaymar fix them to the tow bar somehow as the standard bumper mounts are not enough. Looking foward to seeing finished product.
Cheers Rod
Bolting to the original plates at the rear but have drilled 4 extra holes (6 in total now) and made them thicker so I can get a decent bolt in. Not sure how I'm going to bolt it to the chassis coming in from the side just yet... will cross that bridge when I get to it haha.
Got some more pics i will post up in a second..

So have been working away at the bar a little more, have also spent alot of time trying to pull out the high pressure line for my power steering.... here's a pic to prove how long it takes...
After taking that out I'm now waiting on the new part so I continued with the rear bar. First of all we measured it up and marked out where to cut the pie cuts into the bar to get the bend.
Here's a cool pic of my mate trent having a go at cutting,
Then weld...

With the spare on
Next was to make up the mounting plates. As i said in my previous post i drilled out two more holes on either side to make a total of 6 holes. Then i welded the bolt heads in and a bit of 50x100x4 over the top and cut on an angle to suit the bar... hard to explain, but I will take more pictures of the system when i take the bar off next as i didnt take many whilst putting them on..
Bolted up!
As you can see the standard plastic thing fits over the top so i dont have to use any sheet metal to cover any gaps.
With the plastic off
As you can see I decided on a slight bend but not as far out as slunnies went as I want a better departure angle but i wanted it to come out enough to cover the tow bar as i don't like the look of them when the tow bar setup is sticking right out
Still havnt completely made up my mind on how to do the ends of the bar... and how much I should cut off of the lower bit of the quarter panel...
More pics soon!
Cheers,
Shamo
If you're in Toowoomba, you're welcome to come and have a look at mine. Mine is basically Slunnie's design, but it may give you some ideas seeing it in the flesh.
edit - and I'd suggest putting the spare on when fitting up. with 285s you may need to take a curved piece out to the top of the bar... I'm not sure, but it's something to keep in mind....
Waz
Thanks for letting me see the bar today waz, helped alot!
Spent the afternoon chipping away at it again, got the mounts welded on properly, was having troubles with the welder though, wasnt getting a good neat weld on the thicker stuff, I think im going to buy some thicker welding rods tmrw! might fix the problem.
Otherwise i marked the angle on the ends and cut them and then cut the end pieces which included cutting a 50x100 in half to two 25x100 pieces at 300 long.
Here are some pics...
A better look at the mounts which i previously tried to explain..
Ends..
This is probably where they will join on and i will cut the edge so it has another bend.
Cheers,
Shamo
looks good so far!
