    Talking D1 rock/tree sliders!!

    Hey all

I started making a set of rock sliders for my disco today, so i though i'd throw some pics up...

I decided to use 75x50x2.5-3mm RHS and a combanation of 50mm x 3mm and 50mmx4mm plate for the brackets.

I have only pretty much finnished one side, i couldn't decide on how to mount them, i ended up just mounting them to the sill.
I cut and bent them slightly to try follow the body line a bit better as well..

    ends capped off..

    Mounted..

They sit a fair way off the body, i figured the further away the better incase i come down hard on a rock or something and the slider flexes on the sill and hits the door.

They arn't real pretty at the moment but with a bit of tube extended out for abit more protection and to act as a step they should look abit better

thats a novel way of bolting them on, i'm gonna do the same thing!

i had previously only thought of making up 2 longer bits on either side to bolt to the sills, this way seems just as strong but makes use of less material

Yeah thats what i figured, fitting them the other way with a length of plate on each side of the sill works well, but the weight starts to ad up a a fair bit and the steel plate can be pretty expensive.
I gave this design a strength test by jacking the car off the slider with a hilift, they handled in no worries

Hey Gerald it's a 250 amp mig, we got it brand new off ebay for about $700 (chinese obviously) it's a ripper can't fault it for the price

just wondering from looking at the pics arent these bolted onto what your trying to protect. Isn't this just going to damage the sills anyway if you land on a large rock. Wouldn't it be better coming out off the chassis rails. I love the design it looks awesome and was looking at making a set the same next week with a small step on the side but don't want to stuff my sills if I find a lager rock. My chassis looks like its had something on there before but had been welded directly on and then oxy cut off which is a little scary.

I made and mounted mine in similar fashion, tho I like how you bent them a little to follow the body line, looks good.

I figure if you come down onto a log / rock, the sliders will evenly spread the shock load across the whole body sill, so I can not see it causing any damage to body itself.

The chassis rails seemed too far away to mount and still be strong unless made very heavy duty.

    Thanks guy's

At first i was going to try and mount them to the chassis but as Zuno said the chassis is a fair distance from the sill so alot of leverage is built up over that distance unless you mount them to the chassis outriggers, in the end i thought it was just easyer to mount them to the sill, and they are plenty strong enough.
I mainly want them to jack off , for sliding around tree's, rocks etc and for protecting the body work, this design should handle this without any probs
you would have to come down pretty hard on something to bend the sill.
Most rocksliders manufactured for disco's and rangies mount to the sill.

I also thought about mounting to the body and the chassis, and i still might do this if i'm not confident in the strength of the end result, my only concern is that it might effect the body and chassis's independent movement on the body mounts but i doubt there would be enough movement to worry about?

P.s i will get around to finnishing these soon hopefully
