Thread: CJT's D2 Rear End Fitout

Thought I would throw together some drawers this weekend.

Hope to have them finished before a trip next weekend.

They tie into the black widow half cargo barrier behind the rear seats and attach at the back to the standard tie down points with turn buckles.

There will be 2 drawers to hold spares, tools and recovery gear and leave the space up top for camping gear.

I have finished the frame and I am doing the sheeting now and installing the drawer runners.

Still need to find some latches etc. for the drawers.

Will look sweet when its finished.I was thinking about putting in rear storage,but it cuts down on the room i need for fishing tubs.Here is is a thread
on what i did with my rear door.I used checker plate,which wasnt much dearer
than sheet as it was on sale.Nice job.

I thought the same with taking up space. It will only be a 10min job to remove the drawers as the rear is held down with turn buckles to the standard cargo rings and front is four bolts in the base of the black widow cargo barrier.

With the alli door card I am also going to put a full length fold down bench on it, so with the fridge, drawers and bench I have my kitchen in the back of the disco.

Just a quick question/thought.... Aren't those drawer slides supposed to go on the sides? Are they strong enough to take lever bending motion weight in that direction... if you know what I mean... They just dont look meaty enough...

Still working on where to put them but they are rated to 245kg per pair, the bearings in them would be around 10mm.

I will probably go vertical as that is how they are designed to run.

That looks like that cubelok stuff.

What do your reckon these drawers are costing you in materials?

You are correct and that is the down side of using the aluminium it is expensive.

The biggest expense is drawers runners, the heavy duty ones I have bought are just over $200 a pair but are rated for 240kg.

In total with 2 drawers, marine carpet, T-Handle locking latches, drawers runners and alli I would think around $800.

It is a lot, but I also look at the fact to buy the "Black Widow" drawers would have cost me over $2000.

I could have made them a lot cheaper from steel but like the ease of the alli. All you do is cut and join, no welding or grinding etc.

I am pop riveting the plywood skin to the frame but may swap this for alli sheet in the future depending on how it wears.

The whole lot will be sealed and painted black wherever there is not marine carpet used.

Only had an hour to work on them tonight.

Rear piece of 12mm ply is attached and just needs four holes drilled to fit the cargo barrier.

Drawer slides will be vertical.
