I have to replace the 1st/2nd shift fork in my LT85 and some sadist suggested that I might be able to replace it in situ. I have a spare LT85 and the 110 is sinking into the swamp, so replacement isn't going to happen until it dries up, and my sources are suggesting that's sometime late in January.
So, spare gearbox onto the bench and out with the camera.
Tools
Soft face mallet
Sockets
24mm
17mm
13mm
10mm
13mm spanner
5/32 pin punch
Skinny magnet
Bigger better stronger magnet as backup
Pliers or big screwdriver to remove spring.
Gearbox on bench. Ignore the instructions to remove the bellhousing and extension housing.
Drain oil.
Sludge in a bucket.
Watch out for the springs and the 5 cent pieces at either end of the springs.
I'm sure there's a good reason for removing the gear lever, but I can't see it.
Two of the middle bolts were too close to the housing for my socket, so needed a spanner.
The springs are different lengths. Pull out the ball bearings with a magnet. I had a bigger magnet in the other hand to catch any slips.
Takes a fair bit of whacking to get the pin out, but not too much or it drops into the bottom of the gearbox.
And then I couldn't work out how to get the reverse rail out of the box so I gave in and took off the extension housing and the bellhousing.
Wuss.
Turns out it isn't that hard, the bar that holds the two outside rails together moves enough to stop the rail from slipping out.
And when the extension housing comes off, all the rest of the oil comes out too.
Next step is to put the extension housing back on and see if I can slide the rail far enough into it to get at the shift fork.
