Works for D1's also ...
Basically I don't like using the 88 degree thermostat ... I'm more comfortable with the cooler 78 degree thermostat ...
Problem tho, is that the EFI will pour in extra juice if you do that ... So how can you trick the ECU into thinking it's running at temp?
Tools ... Soldering Iron / solder / Flux / + usual extras
Parts .... 2 core wire / Switch / 1watt ... (1w) 300 Ohm resistor
Solution for me was the following .... There is a temp sender unit located on the passenger side / just in front of the injector for number 1 piston
A better look at it ....
The temp unit is basically a variable resistor .. It starts off at 5000 Ohms when cold and as it gets towards temp, the resistor value is reduced to about 350 odd Ohms (running temp)
The idea is to bridge the 2 original wires via a twin core wire that has a 300 Ohm resistor in line ... and all controlled via a switch in the cabin that you can turn on / off .... and be able to bypass the temp sender at will
We DO NOT cut the original wires .. We just join to them ...
Now solder and join the 2 core wire to each of the existing wires of the plug
Now run the 2 core cable to inside the cabin and hook it up to a switch
Cut and splice in a 300 Ohm resistor to 1 side of the 2 core wire
After the resistor install ... You can test that the line works via the pin at the ECU (under your seat) ... Mine had a finished reading of 260 Ohm
So to start the motor in the cold morning ... Flick the switch OFF (circuit is normal and running at 5000 Ohm)
Start your motor as per normal ...
After a few seconds of running ... Flick the switch ON ... (circuit is now bypassed and running at 300 Ohm) ... you will actually hear the motor drop in revs, But still run's sweet
While the motor is still cold ... you can turn the switch ON & OFF and it will respond with increased / decreased revs appropriately
The reason why it works (bypass) is "spark" finds the path of least resistance
I've had this setup for about the last 2 years and have had no repercussions ...
Cheers
Mike
