    Exclamation xyz repair

CAR WASH WARNING WARNING!! I have had these symptoms twice now -the first time it went away like a lot of folk have described, second time on the highway to gippsland overtaking a truck 115-120 thump down to 3rd lights on flashing panic [it was 0530] limped into Warragul called the RACV and got the best out of my 100km free tow. the day before I went thru a car wash with the underbody spray. Reading all these threads -water & dirt- I will go home & check the xyz - Common cause - the bloody car wash!!! May I suggest unless your in the Kingswood, rip past the underbody wash.

Question - is it advisable to spray the xyz switch with a coating like underbody sealant or even Battery terminal protector?
    Cheers

That must be one powerful under body car wash!

From my inspection of the switch I took from my Disco the most likely entry point for moisture is the small hole where the wire harness enters. On the second hand switch I got I put a dab of silicone sealant in that area. The switch housing cover has a rubber gasket and the cover has several small machine screws holding it in place. Not sure how easy it is for water that is merely sprayed on to the switch to enter. Seems like it is more likely if you submerge the switch or from a steady drip from the AC drain line above it.

    Excellent tutorial!

I've just completed a patch up on mine, and discovered when I got the switch unbolted that somehow the cable entry moulding had been broken off the switch body leaving an open entry point for water. Judging by the amount of water that poured out when I up ended the switch the housing was completely full.

Oddly the only reason I investigated was due to the R and P indicators taking about 5 seconds to come on are those positions were selected. There had been no sign of the usual M&S lights or faults that accompany a drowned switch.

Anyway despite the switch being fairly ordinary condition, application of shock proof superglue and silicone sealant have made the housing serviceable and the shift position lights now respond instantly.

    cheers

    New Model XYZ switch

On top the "old" /original XYZ switch came with the 2001 TD5, new type of switch appeared in the market, very different Electro-mechanism, BUT as a Land Rover tradition this one doesn't last very long.

It took 11 month for this NEW one to failed, it came in a BEARMACH green box, rated as an OEM - link UHB100190-OEM Switch Assy Auto Box Ds2 1998-2004-Land Rover Parts Direct

THIS WAS NOT PURCHASED FROM LRDIRECT but from an other reliable source...

Opened it up and discovered some strange looking contacts... I'm not sure the arrow marked ones causes the issue, since I had installed brand new one...

    Any ideas?
Had someone ended up with "new design" faulty switch?
Any idea how to redirect the AC drain?
Which compound can I apply inside?

    Later model XYZ switch

It's been a while since I last posted. I've been living with XYZ issues for a while. Changing into drive from reverse leads to flashing lights about 50% of the time, and last night the Disco wouldn't even start. I came back an hour later and went through the selector up and down and it started instantly on turning the key. Just a couple of questions. The tutorial photos have gone and I also have a 2004 Disco so I'm guess I have the simpler XYZ switch. I'm going to give the fix a go in the next few weeks, but I'm after some tips on restoring the newer type of switch and some recommendations on lubricating the switch. I'm not keen on using vaseline, WD40, silicone or similar and would prefer to use something that is going to be best in terms of maintaining the form and function of an electrical switch. I'd rather spend a few more dollars and make it last rather than go through a fiddly job again too soon. I diverted the drain hoses years ago, but I also read years ago about placing some type of bag around the switch. Ideas?

I haven't had time to have a look yet. It's only ever been a minor inconvenience which requires the ignition to be switched on and off when going from reverse to drive etc. I'll have a good look at it one day, and check the plug before disassembling the switch.
