    Hard Facing

On a recent thread on adapting series throwouts to diaphram covers someone mentioned hardening 4140.
I used mild steel and hardened with Kasenit.

    Rounded off the bearing surface.

Reverse side showing grub screw holes.

Heated red hot with oxy then liberally sprinkled Kasenit on it.

Heated red hot again then more powder for a deeper harden.

Finally picked up with wire hook and immersed in clean cold water.

Wire buffed to finish. Now the surface is so hard a file will hardly scratch it.

I dabble in a bit of amateur gunsmithing and get a lot of stuff from this mob.
Its better for some things to retain strength in the inside and just harden the wear surface. Quench hardening high carbon if not done right can make the part brittle and it can break.

Another case hardening powder is Hardite, not sure where you would get it from though, or whether you still can, as it contains cyanide.

    Cheers, Mick.
