    Warn XD9000 Full Rebuild

    Gday

Been a while since I've been on, but I thought a few of you may appreciate this.

I used to have an old Warn M8000 winch on the front of the Landy. It was incredibly old and unreliable. I finally cracked it and decided on a full on rebuild. I tried to find a parts manual but even the Tech support at Warn couldn't help me, apparently they don't make the parts for that model anymore.

So one day while noseying through a wrecking yard I came across a Hilux that had been in a head on smash and there trapped in the winch bar; was a very damaged Warn XD9000

$50 later and I was the proud owner.

Next came ordering of parts, I went into my local ARB store who basically tried to sell me a new winch rather than Warn parts (not a big fan of ARB ). I then tried Warn's recommended Australian supplier of parts, who were incredibly expensive. In the end I ordered all of my parts through a nice chap off eBay in America (parts were easily a quarter the price)

I had the exterior gearbox parts sandblasted and then I polished all of the planetary sets up with a wire wheel and a steam cleaner

I had some paint matched and mixed in a spray can and painted the parts that needed it, I also had the drum galvanised to stop it from rusting.

Finally it was all ready to be fitted back together

I slapped a few stickers on and hey presto a good as new winch, which is now effectively an XD9500 because I upgraded and bought a 6hp motor rather than the standard 4.5hp.

This will be bolted to the front of the Ford Ranger, so I can get to the places I used to be able to get in the Defender

And now that one is finished I might try and patch up the old M8000 again, for use on the tandem trailer. If you know of an old Warn 12V motor in good condition send me a PM, the one on mine is pretty knackered. It's only good for scrap at the moment

Well done Jock, what a good build.

Does the winch fit the Ranger with the 6hp motor on it? On the rovers with a centered fairlead the 4.6hp motor sits about 1/2mm off the chassis rail. The 6hp is longer.

Another question...... a problem I came up on. How did you get the brake out of the drum.
    Cheers

    Thanks mate

Yeh just I should hopefully have 20mm clearance

If its the style with the two tangs and the aluminium motor coupler. Place the coupler over the tangs and twist it by hand (one way or the other you'll feel it) this will release the spring pressure on the brake shoes. Its nearly a two person job but you can then push the brake out from the other end using a long punch, while releasing the brake at the same time. Make sure you slide it straight into a piece of pipe or cardboard, if you don't it will unwind and you'll lose the spring tension on the brake shoes

If its the older style like in the old M8000... I'm still trying to figure that one out

Ahhhhhhhhhhh!! Good man, I'm not sure why I never tried that! Thanks also for the heads up re the clutch. I was thinking even if I could shift it to clean it up with a bore hone or W&D. Thanks again. Its an XD9000, I seem to accumulate and these things and fill them with mud.
    Cheers

All of the Warn winch model parts lists are available on this site: Warn Authorized Parts and Service Center: warnserviceparts.com
I tried to buy some parts off them recently but ended up cancelling the order as their shipping charges to Australia were excessive.

A lot of the M8000 parts are common to the XD9000 the same overhaul manual covers both.

The service manual is available here http://www.tacomaterritory.com/~ccor..._Sheet_XD9.pdf

Jock, Who did you use in the USA for parts ?

    Hey mate

Yeh I tried there, my serial no for the M8000 wouldn't match up to any of the numbers. In the end I emailed customer support and they told me it wasn't possible to do. Although he was incredibly helpful and sent me a few freebie stickers and some information

    Thanks

Top bloke and very easy to get on with
