DT90-L322 Range Rover Dual Battery Kit Installation

Hi Grant, if you can hang off for about a fortnight, I have a new expand version of the DT90-L322 kit being prepared and this will easily meet your needs.

The kit will now be setup with an Anderson plug at the rear bumper.

The main holdup has been an upgrade of the DT90's operating features.

For the last 12 months or so, the DT90 has had the TIME-OUT feature but I have now added REVERSE CHARGING so that if your two batteries in your Rangy go flat, you will now be able recharge both of them via the Anderson plug at the rear.

I have an L322 coming in very shortly, to be set up and photographed to enable me to supply full detailed installation instructions.

As for the wiring of the trailer, this diagram should help, but if you need more info just post up your questions.

I am on the Gold Coast. But if you are near, I can do you a deal if you can supply a Guinea Pig for the new wiring set up.

The main DT90-L322 DBS is exactly the same setup, it is just the set up to the rare bumper that I have to finalise.

Tim, I am in Sydney but happy to bring the car up for the guinea pig work. Car is in the panel shop now after my recent parking,lot issues but will be back next week.

You will need to allow for about 2 to 3 hours max, for the new kit installation.

The existing kit takes less than a hour but I don't have my L322 available, to work out where the cable to the rear bumper has to go, so I will use yours, but I think it should be pretty straightforward.

I put it in this week and it's a fairly straight forward install due to a few little tricky things already being worked out by Tim.
Like the length of the brace, the angle cut on the end of the brace etc.
The battery looks like it belongs in that spot too.
My only question is what are the flashes on the led?
Eg what's 3 red flashes then one green?
What's constant red?
Also is there any way to start your car from the second if required or should I get a long set of jumper leads?

I do have a question, i always read that 2nd battery should be the same capacity (or less 10% maximum) as the 1st.

When i see a Optima D34 55Ah with a main 110Ah, i'm asking by which miracle:confused:that does it work good?

Second batteries can be any size, and type, don't believe everything you read on the Internet. ;). Think of it this way - the second battery will be discharged at a different rate to the first no matter what size it is when you're out camping right? When this happens and you start the vehicle, each battery will still pull different amounts of current from the alternator to accept a charge, regardless of if they are the same size or not. Once both batteries are full or nearly full, the charge current to each may stabilise at a few hundred mA but that's the only time you'll see them draw similar or equal currents, so how does size come into it at all?

That sort of spiel usually comes from a salesman or website trying to sell you something you don't need, don't fall for it.

As an example, when towing my van with the work car, the alternator is charging 4 batteries - 2 in the van (100Ah deep cycles), one in the back of the ute (N70) and the cranking battery (something smaller that you would think being a 4WD)

No issues at all - and I've done this sort of thig over many different vehciles over the years and I get very good battery life (5 to 7 years) on most batteries I've had. :)

Also, it is commonplace for people to get the requirements of connecting batteries in a parallel setup, mixed up with what is required when connecting batteries in a series setup.

In the case of one of my L322 dual battery kits, where you have a 110Ah cranking battery parallel connected to a 55Ah auxiliary battery, you effectively have a 165Ah 12v battery.

If you connected the 110Ah cranking battery in series with the 55Ah auxiliary battery, you would have a 55Ah 24v battery. And this type of setup is a No-No.
