Defender Cubby Box with Gauge/Switch Panel

After fitting air bags to the 110 (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...rear-axle.html) I needed somewhere to mount a few extra gauges and switches.

My old county had the radio fitted in the cubby box, so I figured why not fit the gauges/switches there? If the "front face" of the cubby box was sloped back a bit more there would be enough room, and the angle wouldn't be so steep to make them hard to read.

I drew a few sketches in Autodesk Inventor and settled on this one:

All of the main parts were cut out of 10mm MDF:

The smaller parts were shaped out of pine, (I'd forgotten how satisfying it is using a hand plane ):

    Starting to come together:

Test fitting the cup holder, (gotta have those luxuries!):

All screwed and glued together with the screw heads filled in preparation for covering:

I had an auto-trimmer cover the box as I don't have the skill or gear to do it. While that was being done I started on the gauge panel. This was made out of 1.5mm Aluminum, I printed off the layout for the gauges, switches, and bends onto a sticker to use as a template:

Test fitting the gauge panel in the newly covered box:

All done with the gauges and switches fitted, it does look odd with them mounted upside down, but it all makes sense when its fitted in the car

If anyone wants the drawings I can post them up.

    Cheers,

Hi Mike, the trimmer charged me $170, (sounds a bit steep, but quite a few hours went into getting it right).

    Cheers,

Ouch - that IS a bit steep, but the trim does look extremely professional.

    Hi, Drawings as requested.

Please note that they are a guide only, I recommend checking that the dimensions are correct for your application.

    Cheers,

    Tim
