    Jag's Defender Build/Restoration/Adventures

    Where do I begin ....

I flew to Darwin as more of a holiday really, but the intension was to pick up a Defender and drive it all the way back to Cairns.

Sally (original I know) was certainly rough around the edges but my concern was whether or not she'd get me home. She did.
And it was without doubt one of the best drives I've ever undertaken.

So now we're home and it's been one job at a time so I thought I'd share the build/restoration/adventures here.

    Cheers,

    Jon

She's had two water jet sprays underneath to get the decades of red dirt off. I've stopped however as every time I do I find some thing else to fix.

It started with the 330CCA battery that was bouncing around with no clamps or any type of retaining system.
Turfed the checker plate base that was screwed into the floor.
Measured, welded and painted my own dual battery tray. Just had to give the paint 24hrs to set.
Also sanded back and rust converted the inside of the seat box.

I made a start on a roof rack while a waited for everything to dry.

Tyres and rims on. I'll try to get some photos tomorrow.

Replaced the lower rear shocky bushes to stop them from slapping around - Just so I could drive the truck.
That's when I found the shocks were for aesthetic purposes only and I could compress them up and down as I pleased.
Lucky new springs and shocks are on their way.

I've swapped the headlamps that were TERRIBLE each morning on the way home from the territory. It didn't help old Sally was so cross-eyed the passenger headlight was into the trees on the right side of the road. Adjusted the new Narva ones back onto the road and they light up the road perfectly.

Last two major concerns - A leaking injector pump and a whole in the passenger foot-well (bulkhead) ..... Hopefully I can make a start on pulling out the air-con for a better look tomorrow.

    Rack is coming along.

See how much I can done over the weekend.

    Roof Rack

    I'll start with the rack.
    1. Cut out the holes so I can run any wiring through if needed.
    2. Then it was the last two bends so that the rack can contour with the roof line. So it's a 2m flat rack, with .8 tapering down.
I was going to weld on the mesh but have decided against it as the rack will be so low to the roof, I won't be able to wash the roof once on.
So I'm going to make a frame or the mesh to bolt the mesh panel on.
Oh and the mesh panel will only be .8 and will sit in the middle of the rack as the rear 1.2 is for the roof top tent.
    3. Ran out of wire and had to call it quits for the day, but all cross bars are ALMOST all welded in.

    Tyres and Lift

Ok so new rubber and rims look good.
This weekends mission was to fit the Terrafirma springs and shocks.
I went with medium and I'm really happy so far.
I'll detail the fitting of the springs soon, but basically - I snapped bolts on the old original 'shock tower retaining rings'. I tried very hard to nurse them off, but they were never coming off.
Means I have to stop in for some rover spares again on Monday.
Realising it was a sitting duck for the rest of the weekend, I decided to rust proof and spray up the shock towers and left her sitting on the springs. Went back to working on the rack.
Rough measurements have it lifted 40mm in the front (knew they were sagged bad) and 20mm in the rear.
So I'm really happy with the height understanding they settle down over the next 20,000kms and I also have some things to add to the weight yet, that should sit her down a little better.
I'll have exact heights once its on level ground.
EVERY SINGLE shock rubber under the truck was RS.

    Hi Jon,

Good to see another shed on wheels up this way. They are the perfect machine for someone looking to explore the great far north. There is plenty to see up there and your Sally will take you there. I love how the rack is coming along. It it very much what I have been looking at making up for my 110. My existing one is like half a block of flats on the roof and I'm looking for something a little more 'slim line'. Currently mine with 7.50 16 tyres and a tropical roof plus rack stands at a lofty 2.6 metres! I like your design. It looks like the ADF landy type.

There are many people on this forum to talk to for endless hours about anything to do with Landy's. I hope you all the best on your travels in your unique ride.

    Cheers,
    Brian.

    Thanks Brian !!
I'd say that I'll keep an eye out on the road for you, but I don't get down to Brownsville much.
Not sure if your a footy fan but I suspected the whole of Townsville will have a little chip on their shoulder over the next few days.?. Tough way to end a season ...
    Cheers,
    Jon

No closer to finding the transfer leak, but I spent this evening tracing the injector pump leak.
Bad news is it's a seal where the body joins, and sadly I think it will be Land Rover mechanic to pull out and send to shop.
I simply don't have the time to have a crack at it.
So maybe a timing belt while the tming is all locked up.
This is going to hurt ...

She's a good looking rig Jon, you'll have fun

I like your battery tray. I might have to have a closer look at how I've got mine.
