Building the Ultimate touring 130 with slide on - my version...

Firstly, awesome work so far mate!

Dont get me wrong; I have no idea what would work or not but I just want to share an idea with you see what you reckon.

I was thinking instead of conventional roll-out drawers, use a swing out type. I thought of this because the swing hub would probably be alot tougher than the rollers (I was thinking of using the same type as a swing-out wheel carrier for example) and so you could load heavier stuff in it.

Also, say if you had a swing out drawer with a lid and was shallow you could swing that out, theres your bench and theres like conventional drawers behind it.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the input and encouragement! I have seen a good idea for a swing out fridge, which then drops down when swung out to give easy access. Think it was on an Adventure camper. The idea has some merit, havnt ruled it out yet, a lot simpler than the drop type slides.

Its a 120 originaly, so PRE ARDs,, non issue

How do you secure your spare wheels?
It looks like they are secured through the stud holes, so how do you get them off with the canopy on?
Are you going to cover them or just leave them visible in front of the canopy?

Yep what he said. It's an '84 vehicle, so the only things going down well with the forward leaning posts are any unlucky Roos! You will notice a lot of the "trendy" winch bars being fitted to new vehicles have the centre hoop leaning forwards...

Hi Neale,

The spare wheels will be secured buy a metal strap with an over centre clamp and access on the side. Simply flip the catch and roll out. On the to do list. I'll just leave them visible from the side, and will have a simple little door to make use of the space on the tray under the spare. The two leg attaching clamps fit there nicely each side. The space above the spares will give good airflow for the AC condensers, small one each side, more on that when I get up to it :)

Has anyone got a simple quick way of attaching the camper to the tray, ie no tools and easy to remove? Was thinking of a heavy duty over center latch in each corner but they only seem to come in an 8mm shaft size, bit small I reckon. Have a few other ideas but are open to suggestions?

Will have to pull my finger out and do a heap of work as we are going to give it a test run at Christmas, which everyone tells me is fast approaching!

Bit of an update. Have finished the doors, fixed the camper to the tray, bolted the roof top tent on, trial set up with oz tent joined and all looks to work. Are now finishing off a quick kitchen unit to use over christmas. Will see how it works and modify if needed. I looked at the Drifter kitchens for inspiration, and are using a few of my own ideas also. I have also bought some 2K paint to respray the old Landy, and have ordered the air con bits. Sorry for lack of photo's and updates, crazy bizzy time of year, 3 young kids etc, etc! Will post some photo's and more info soon.

Did a bit of maintenance on the old girl, I replaced the leaking rear brake caliper with a new one and flushed the brake fluid. I used an air vacume brake bleeder, works a treat. Just go it from ebay. I also replaced the radius arm bushs as they were stuffed and I wanted to get to the bottom of the vauge steering. Without a good press, I simply ground down a cold chisel to a rounded shapeon one side so it wouldn't dig in and damage the radius arm, and then bashed it in between the bush and the arm. It went in easy about half way so turned over and bashed it in the other half. A skinnier chisle would probably go all the way through and work even better, but even so it didn't take much to tap the old bush out.

Got them all out without a problem and didn't gouge into the arms at all. To fit the new ones I cleaned up both the radius arm and the new bush with emery paper, bit of WD40, then carefully tapped in with an old boss I just happened to find close to the right size. Just be carefull to tap it in square. I have more photo's if anyone wants. I took it for a test run and it is a lot better in the steering, still a bit vauge, but heaps better. I also took the front sway bar off as it was in the way of the radius arm bolts, and after a good drive along a windy road, I'm stuffed if i can notice any difference so it's staying off! Later I had a look at the UJ's in the steering column and they are pretty stuffed. Can see plenty of movement when wobbling by hand, so will replase these next, then mabey check the steering box adjustment.

Here it is all set up. The plan is to get some sides made up as the oztent ones are the wrong shape. Will use it over christmas and see how it goes.
