    Smile My County Build

    Hi all,

I've just bought myself a new County and have begun slowly building her up, one - so I can register it (haha) and two - to be an exploring, mud tearing, rock climbing expedition vehicle. I have grand plans for her (Beatrice) and hopefully they come through!

    Heaps of photos!

It all started with a trip down to Tasmania to pick her up...

And there she was, in all her shining glory... (She's got Defender doors... nice addition)

Obligatory 'selfie' - I just had to - new County!

and of course the first glory shot!

Driving onto the boat - quite the experience, and very comfortable. The 2 onboard, open bars where nice addition - somewhat tipsy by 11pm...

    Arriving in Melbourne

In all the excitement, I forgot to have a good look at the chassis when I picked it up and the seller 'forgot' to mention this. A little disappointing so I knew I had my work cut out for me at this point...

First dirt drive back home with a mate driving (petrifying)

"Cut that rust out and I'll give you a blue slip"

"Alright" - brand new 180amp AC/DC TIG welder

A few welds around the car (broken air box bracket)

    First proper dirt drive

And now to the build. Can't believe all of this came out from inside the chassis, but of work cut out for me but nothing I cant handle - better get to it.

Some new out riggers from the UK. The trailing ARM link was the wrong type (2007+) so im STILL waiting on a replacement. Long story short, without any defamation, dont buy anything from lrparts.net, it's been headache after headache - prices are good though :/

Lying on your back trying weld is harder than it looks...

Exhaust out - boy, she's loud!

Ambulance ride! Most awful issue with my tonsils, the bag is full of a drained abcess that's grown 3 times in the past 3 months and been on the strongest antibiotics for that period - surgery is next Monday - wish me luck!

2 days later, back to it! Some of the rusty chassis bits...

While waiting for the replacement outriggers, I thought I'd take to the electrics and pretty them up. I think I've bitten off more than I can chew...

but all cleaned up with a plethora of cable ties, time for a coffee!

    New sub to boot!

    And a stereo too!

This is how she sits tonight, rewired, new stereo, roof console and lighting. Now where are those chassis parts!

I'll be sure to keep you updated, time depending of course. Next up is a camper build in the back!

Mate it's looking good! Rust in the chassis is a bit rough, but thats life I suppose. I hope you put some dynamat on that firewall before you put it all back together, or the heartache will resurface, much like your abscess. hahaha

Are they actually Defender doors? The push button doors were introduced in 1987.

Yeap - the previous owner swapped them out from a '93 - hence the sticker.

What model is it? Along with the thicker doors in 1987 came a smaller steering wheel and the seats moved inboard - if it originally had the thinner doors, and the larger steering wheel (looks like it from the pictures), then elbow room could suffer - how do youo find it?

    My County Build

It's an 89 but the previous owners have done a bit of work with it and to be honest I'm not 100% sure of what's been changed and what's stock. Steering wheel is quite nice though - nicer than my 200tdi's. Quite thin - it had a hard plastic shell

    My County

Looks like a defender to me, my county got stringers on the roof for strength and the door handles are inset into the door to stop trees and objects breaking them.
