Your Landrover is close to the same batch as my ex-army one. But I have removed most of the military equipment and fitted a cab.

For the oil leaks, see Colin's post in the other thread.

I wore out the original bar treads thirty years ago, and got replacements, but also wore out them, and about twenty years ago switched to radials, actually Bridgestone desert duellers (same size). These are the same size (7.50x16) and are the same as I have run on my 110 for thirty years. (about ten years ago I scored a set of 110 wheels, which look like the originals but have a slightly different offset, and allow the steering stops to be adjusted to give a markedly better turning circle! This means wheels are interchangeable between the two vehicles.)

I had experience running radials on my first 2a in the mid sixties, and as I expected the radials are a marked improvement on the bar treads in all respects. Yes, I have got bogged - but no more often than with the bar treads.

But I would be very reluctant to go to wider tyres, although the Bridgestones now seem to be hard to find, and I have yet to find a suitable replacement - I'll have to probably this year.

    Finally RWC :-)

Yes - exciting week with finally getting that litel RWC piece of paper.

6 hours of work to finish off the seals etc. on SUnday and then RWC Monday.

Heres what project "Stop LEak" entailed:

Power wash under side of vehicle.

New rocker cover gasket and rubber bolt seals

New gasket - oil filter to engine - new oil filter and oil filter seal

New sump gasket - I lost the new sump washer for the drain plug so used original and some thread sealant

New Transfer case gasket - panel beating to straighten the transfer case, new drain plug copper washer and sealant.

New gasket oil filler to engine - this was leaking everytime I filled her with oil.

New copper seals for the banjo from bottom to top of engine

Sealant on each bolt that went in.

    End Result:

NO engine leaks - I mean there is none

There is still some transfer case/gearbox weepage - might be a seal or something on the transfer case input but I will get to that down the track.

Additional issues caused by the work:

    Oil pressure wire looked dodgy.

No oil pressure on test drive This could have been cause by one of two things - or maybe both.

Firstly I fixed the wiring - which was dodgy but not broken - the meter would work when the wire went to ground

Some advice said maybe the oil pump had an airlock so I ran it while watching the top end with the rocker cover breather off and oil was coming up as I reved it so all good.

I also - before I started I gave the Oil pressure sender a good coupla whacks with a spanner - thinking maybe it was dry from lack of oil for a week or so.

Bingo, after watching the oil at the top end it was working again :-)

The Guy was happy with it - still made a comment about - still some leaks - and told me the carby was leaking petrol

    Vietnam Confirmation

Very exciting to get some confirmation from the Author of Tough Truck, and Mud and Dust that our Landy did make it over to Vietnam

Left Aus on the HMAS Jeparit and arrived in SVN 30 May 1971

Left SVN on the HMAS Jeparit on 6th Feb 1972

252 days - just over 8 months service in Vietnam

Next step is to visit the AWM and get a copy of the document used by the researcher - that is a plan for later n the year
