Today i was bored..... i looked at Grommet and pondered the thought of a spare wheel carrier.......... then it hit me....... make it myself.....
so i popped down to bunnings and started my project....
ok now the truth..... i had purchased the parts i needed some months back and now was the time to get excited...
It had to be easy to use and had to support a 35" tyre.
So i cut a piece of 1/4" plate to the shape i wanted. I drilled the plate to use the Std LR holes in the rear cross member.
Then i had to space the Stub axle out about 1/2" so i used many plates and welded it all together.
Here it is
Then i bolted it on, but only just to hold it in place, i'm going to make some crush tubes for the rear cross member....
Then i made the wheel carrier frame up.
Its an over kill and the next one i build will be a lighter version.
I utilised a Std Defender rear wheel carrier bracket.
Then i trial fitted the lot. i needed to adjust the bar work slightly and all i need to do is make the catch, well fit it really as i have one i bought.
How long did it take so far??? 10 hours.....
Will it be for sale.... YES.... its my prototype and i'm building another one.
How much will you pay for this great idea....... $350

I'm keen - been looking at all the aftermarket options - happy to pay you instead. Getting a '07 Fender 110 once available so knock me one up. I guess a PM to sort the details is the way to go.

PS - Looking again I see you have a Ute - can it be modified to open with the door?

what are you using as the boss on the stub axle? something you had made up ?

I'm interested, too. I looked at using a trailer hub with the flange removed but they are cast so they aren't really suitable.
BTW, I hate you blokes who can weld. I've got a really good MIG welder but I can't see what I'm welding.

Why cant you see it??? is the weld flash too dull to see thry the mask??? if so you can get lighter masks, Arc mask are darker i think (lense), make sure you have one for Mig.

actually, they go by the amperage you are using... higher amps you need darker lens..
you can get them in shades varying from 6 up to 16+ i think..
you can get clear magnifing lens as well, i use a 5x on fiddly stuff.....

Subscriberneat, but you will definitely need those crush tubes, the crossmember is made of plasticine, mine is anchored at 3 points and I still had distortion of the CM after only 300kms.

G'day All, My 1984 110 County has crush tubes inbuilt into the rear x member, I made my own swing away tyre carrier about 13 years ago and it has not caused me any grief in that time, the locking device I used was the tailgate toggle etc from a Land Rover, it works and it is lockable by passing a padlock thru the toggle cheers Dennis
