one door all in primer, air vents, door hinges, back wall in and out, dash all in first coat of primer.

Started welding up the chassis that is cracked and corroded. Rust proofed the inside of the chassis with some Staun 329 I had. plenty of wire brush action on the chassis to clean it up and sanding to removed the rust and scale.

Picked up some material from a mate to make a work bench which would be good and am looking at a small sandblasting booth to use to clean up the small and fiddly pieces.

Decided to paint the car the cream / white colour. My Uncle's LWB tray back was this colour and I always liked the look of it.

Hoping to get the cabin back together soon so we can start on the brakes and engine rebuild to get it going (and stopping again!) soon. The 2 month delay in doing anything was a combination of getting married / honeymoon and having no access to a compressor!

Hi looks good my 2a ute is about at the same stage as yours just can't wait to finish so i can drive it.

i have the half cab painted in primer now and have started on some of theother bits and pieces that need to be black. the seat box covers are all in primer, ready to mount.

I am going to throw the body back together then give the whole body a few top coats and get it on the road with the spare motor i have, all i need to do to get to that stage is new brake lines , master clyinder, new clutch, mount engine and build the body, so roughly 6 weeks work. I want it registered and on the road to then rebuild the motor and start mini projects of rebuilding things like steering , suspension etc.

Tray i am in 2 minds, building a steel one from 40 x 40mm or just knock up the original looking wooden one with 70x 40 treated pine with a hardwood deck. i reckon the wood might be the better option.

The old complaining nieghbours, one must always consider them before firing up the angle grinder early on a Sunday morning, I prefer to just hand sand my panels with a plasterers sanding block, use the old palm for the more hard to get at stuff, someone told me once on this site, its only a landy dents and all, forget the bog and crack out the house paint! some sense to it I guess, oil based enamel with a spalsh of 2k hardener is not bad, you are doing well, sounds like when you are finished Super Cheap will go bust!!!

Quite a lot has happened. The body is back together all in primer. New engine in. Brakes all replaced, lines and fittings etc. Chassis is fixed. Tray designed, steel quoted, ready to order. Paint is sorted, again, just have to order.

Well, most of my time has been on the Tray. I started to weld it up with my $99 Ryobi ARC. Poor old thing has no fan and a thermo cut out that cuts the welder off every 3-5 mins of welding and needs 20 mins to cool. Very frustrating.


I took the plunge and picked up a New welder. CIG Weldskill ARC + Tig. Great tool.

This made the task easy, but i needed to brush up on my arc skills and also learn to Tig. So, whilst standing and pondering what i should do, my legs got tired. So I built a stool to sit at the bench and ponder... much more comfortable.

Now the timber on the stool is the timber i scored (Free :) ) for the tray.. Its Spotted Gum. 136mm wide, 30mm thick boards. Nice

By far the hardest is the hinges getting them square etc, i am not as precise enough or patient enough to get it spot on!

I am in the process now of grinding the welds back, going over with the tig the dodgy arc welds i did to make sure they are ok. I bought a full face grinding mask, as a few months ago i got a piece of metal in my eye even though i had safety glasses on, its a good bit of kit.
