Coming to Australia - Bluey's Rebuild part 9

    Hi everyone

it was June the last time I posted so thought I'd update you on my progress.

Well I've bolted on the roofrack behind the Maggiolina and wired up the roof bar spotlights. These are wired in pairs and are switched independantly from the main lighting system so are for off road use only. The switches are mounted in a Mud Dash.

All of the rear storage boxes have been bolted down along with a 60lt water tank. This now gives us 100lts of on board water storage.

I have mounted two flood lights at the rear - these are switched through two relays. One relay is activated by the reverse switch and gets power from the main battery whilst the other is activated by a switch by the rear door and receives power from the aux battery for setting up camp.

I have also installed four 12V marine grade sockets, one under the bonnet for a lamp, two behind the bulkhead in the load bay for laptop battery charging and for plugging in the Maggiolina interior light and one by the rear door.

At this years Billing show we bought a solar panel, 60lt Engel fridge and a Southdown Engineering fuel tank guard with interchangeable drop plate or recovery point. The solar panel has been bolted down on the roofrack and charges the aux battery through a controller mounted in the battery box. The fridge is mounted on a slide bolted to the top of the drawer. We also bought an insulated cover for the fridge.

Last week we splashed out on an iPod ready DVD player which is mounted in the Mud Dash. We also had a rear view camera fitted so hopefully there should be no reversing accidents. We also bought a handheld GPS unit so that we can take it with us when we stray from the vehicle.

This week I installed a roof console for mounting a two way radio in when we get to Oz. I also bolted some stainless steel yacht steps to the sides so that we can climb up to the tent or roofrack without having to get the ladder!

Jobs still to do include fabricating a cargo barrier, fitting center child seat, making a guard for link pipe between main and aux fuel tanks, building a tool box into the passenger side jerry can locker and building/fitting more storage boxes in the rear. There's probably more but thats all I can think of at the moment!

I'll have a go at posting some pictures later

Looks like a proper expedition rig. Nice.

What sort of front grille is that?

Nice looking rig AndyK. Why did you bolt the solar panel down though? When we travel for extended periods you often will find you will like a place and stay there for a couple of days or even a week. When you do you will need the solar panel to top up your batteries with the panel and it helps having the panel on a prop stand with a long cable so that you can position it to get the best exposure. If its bolted to the rack then it may not be as affective.

Just a thought... Also you might want to think about getting a ARB bullbar fitted when you get here. A lot of peoples travels have been ruined by a kangaroo strike...

Also, got a link to your original thread? Where are you thinking of going and when?

    Hello again,

the grill is a KBX one - if you google KBX Upgrades you will get to their site. KBX is my two mates' company hence the advertising on the spare wheel covers! Andy has supplied grills to Australia so keep your eyes peeled!

Linking to the start of this thread I'm afraid is beyond my capabilities but if you do a search for my posts they will be there.

Our original plan was to do an extensive tour of Europe then head for India then ship to Perth but politics has stepped in and stopped that plan. Pakistan has stopped issuing visas to travel through in a vehicle so the trip has been split in two. What we intend doing now is a tour round Europe - possibly popping into Iran then shipping the vehicle to Perth for our tour of Oz before settling down. As long as our house sells then we aim to start the trip around June next year and be in Oz around November - I can't wait!!

As we are touring Europe first that is why anything on the outside of the vehicle is securely bolted down! Thats not ideal for the solar panel I know but after all the whole vehicle is a set of comprimises. Rosy doesn't like bull bars although I do but she's the boss so we haven't fitted one. She did a nine month tour of Oz in a 'cruiser without a bull bar so she doesn't see why Bluey should have one.
