Duramax Powered Defender

G'day Sitec,
I have reading your builds with interest so quite interseted in your progress so far. Will have to catch up with you one day to have a stick beak. Your 101 is going to be a beast and that cummins will last forever. I have almost completed a 4 inch snorkel and a moded a 300Tdi air cleaner to suit. I just need to get to Adelaide and buy a few more air hoses to complete that. I'm going to leave this on hold for 12 months as I have started on Duramax conversion number 2 in my 130 Extra cab ute and will pinch radiators and intercooler to save time and money.
My other Duramax/Allison turned up early October. I have stripped that ute and started with fire wall mods. Anyway, thats another story so will have to start another thread in a couple of weeks to get me motivated in the shed again.

Rear shaft compared to standard 130. new shaft has 1350 series unis and i think the standard ones are 1310. Flange is rover pattern so will bolt straight in.

The front shaft was a pain because the Salisbury seems to sit closer to centre of vehicle which is a pain due to sump clearance. I also needed to go out wide to give me enough clearance around the auot trans. Front shaft consists of 3 double cardons, a centre bearing and adaptors to bolt double cardons to the the rover bolt pattern. I hope the thing is not going to vibrate or have some weird harmonics but i wont know until i drive it! Just need time not to bolt it in! At least now i have the shafts i can get the fabrication finished around the engine sump and exhaust.

Well, I got a bit technical with the tape measure tonight, and I think Im going to have the same issue as you, as yes you are right.. The Salisbury front diff is closer to the center.. With the 101 I think I'm going to have to modify the sump as well... Having just reversed the sump I might be removing it again!!! Grrrr! Was going to ask where you had your prop made but then had a re read! Will get to that stage and c how I go!! :)

Dont buy the shafts from where i did!!! Bloody clown supplied wrong PCD to bolt up to the diff's and transfercase! I sent four thousand emails to him trying to get it resolved and then gave up. I ended up re-drawing my own adapters in auotcad and getting a work colleague to cnc a set. I need to cut into my sump more for clearances and then just have a double cardon at the transfer case only. I really dont want to have a centre bearing if i can help it. This means i probally will have to get an Adelaide mob to modify the front shaft to suit. If you want a bit more specific info let me know. You going to Melrose at Easter. Will have to catch up.

Oh, that's not good. Yes, I am Melrose bound.... In a Cummins powered 101!! Well, thats the plan. My issue will be the bell housing. As the transfer case front output is only 35mm from the side of the gearbox and the Salisbury is closer to the center it means the prop tube will fowl the bell housing by a guestamate of 50mm.. Will know in a few weeks when it goes in! Cheers for now.

Well, have made some progress but sort of side tracked in the last 6 months as i have started another conversion and this one will go on hold for a while. Anyway, i have finished most of the driveline mods (except for front tail shaft) all most ready to pull engine out and finish welding floor pans etc.
The other thing i finished is the tempory intake filtration etc. I am not 100% with what i have done but it will do for now. The 4 inch snorkel is done bar a bit more of grinding and then a polish up. Anyhow, i wont do much more as i'm going to pinch a few things for the extra cab.

Re your front tail shaft, look up a mob in England called Rakeway Motorsport (or engineering). They do this prop center bearing assy for about £130 from memory. Its compatible with Land Rover props. If you bolted this mid way then made two simple single uni props it might simplify the issue.... The 101's props ran at ridiculous angles originally and seemed to cope, so I think you'd be fine with std wide angle joints at each end of the shaft... My sump will need a bit of modifying but I think its going to clear the bell-housing... just!!!! :)

Yep, seen their gear and looks impressive. With the twin cab, i reckon i can get away with a straight shaft as the front Salisbury pinion is closer to the chassis than a rover diff. The main issue is that the clearance between the allison and the shaft is close. As it is i have to get the grinder out and remove some castings that protude and in the way.

Took me 5 years for the 1st one and not completed and almost finished the second one within 12 months! I have stolen quite a few items to get my extracab going as I can’t afford all the parts, i.e. radiator, intercooler,gearbox/transfer case adaptor, 4 million brackets etc. I have actually moved my other conversion around the yard, but just trying to sort out a myriad of issues with wiring, fuel rail pressures issues on the motor and waiting on some filters form the US so when I replace a $3.00 O-ring in the trans I can replac eall filters. This project is on hold for 12 months at least while I get the other one sorted.
