DIY Drop Bench for 97 Disco – in just 35min!

Ok, hook up trailer to the Disco for an honest days garden work. Open rear door and get things out of trailer. Forget something heavy and reverse trailer down grassy slope with door wide open, this will drag door in dirt, possible damage door hinges, gouge paint, force trailer into door lining/board and rip, break and tear the lining off for you!!! Easy! Alternatively, just unclip the lining!

    1) Use old lining to trace replacement on a 5mm ply sheet (once recovered from garden bushes after being torn off in frustration by owner)
    2) Use your jigsaw and cut out shape (include spot for the door handle the first time!!)
    3) Cover ply with leftover marine carpet, staple and glue. (It is not required to staple your fingers and hand webbing to the ply, but it would give you a better idea of my frantic speed of repair )
    4) Obtain 2ft of 19mm laminated timber for the bench to fit central to the rear door (I told you its not rubbish!!)
    5) Use a piano hinge to fit bench top to the covered 5mm ply (I used 6-7 threaded small bolts cause the ply was thin and I didn’t want it pulling through). I used chipboard screws into the laminated particle board.
    6) Refit door lining and new bench top back in position (my clips were all broken, so a little imagination was required)
    7) Cut off some old dog chain for each side and tech screw one end of each to the rear door frame (metal up near window). Fix chain to the board so it hangs nice and flat
    8) Fix drop bench back to door so its out of the way in transit (I used another tech screw on the underside of the bench and an ocy-strap)

Ta Da!!! A great new camping bench for coffee and sandwiches

You could use all manner of funky lining, checker plate, etc

    Happy travels
