    DIY Defender Headlight Guards

For those that are interested I knocked these up earlier in the week after cracking a Hella H4

I had a close look and noticed that there a 4 holes for plastic screw inserts, but there are only 2 screw inserts from factory. I went to my local Rare Spares place and $1.70 later I walked out with 8 screw inserts.

You can see the rest in the pics

    Any questions fire away

Yeah mate perspex, someone was throwing it out about 2 years ago and I finally got round to using it.

I just used a jig saw with one of the plastic blades. On mine its variable speed, so I used quite a low speed. You have to watch cutting it though; the blade gets hot and starts to melt the plastic, so you have to pull out and let it cool before you can keep cutting.

I used a sharp hand plane to finish the edges, would take ages with a file

The other trick I found when drilling it; is to drill very slowly. Otherwise it chips the perspex to easily. When drilling a large hole start small then work your way up through the drill bits to the size you want

    Nice job

Use uv polycarb and it will last for years, normal perspex will break after a while

I was going to cut some but did think people used them

Great idea, same as the after market ones....

BUT.... like all protectors made of Perspex or similar......

You have 3 surfaces for the light to shine through and 3 surfaces to get dirty and stop the light.....

But well done on the cheap protection.

I used to work with plastics, for cuttin Perspex just use a circula saw one with a fine tooth blade will minimise chipping. Can also cut Alloy same way but use lube. Use to cut up to 10mm thick alloy plate this way.

Good idea mate, I was talking to the guy i buy my perspex from about cutting it, he said the blunter the cutting tool is the better esp drills as they are better to melt their way through than cut and same with jig saw, just something to try
