Talking Stooge's Custom Steering Guard D1

I finally bit the bullet and decided to stop procrastinating and make my steering guard for the beloved D1. The decision to make one is based on:

    1) Off the shelf items are waaaaaaaaay to expensive for what they are
    2) I wanted mine to be almost identical in design as the original, except for a few mods

So I went off and bought the materials and started on it. Cost of materials, including paint, sanding disks, cutting disks etc, about $40.

    Pics tell the story.

    1) Bought materials from the tip shop, the black pipe (3mm wall thickness) and flat bar (in triagle shape - 6mm thick). All up, $9.00

    2) Cut pipe to length - 920mm and positioned with jack for measurments. Cut and position first flat plate onto chasis.

    3) Cut length of flat bar to position between chasis bar and tube. Tack into position, remove and weld.

    4) Clamp flat bar against chasis bar to mark for cutting.

    Cut flat bar

    5) Position guard to take measurements of rear legs

    6) Cut rear legs ready to tak weld in place

    7) Tack weld in position, remoce guard and fully weld all areas. Comparison between stock and new

    8) Finished for the day. Cleaned up paint using sanding disk, looks bling Still to do end caps on tube and bracing bar on front legs.

Shall finish off today and post final pics

Finished it now, will put rubber end caps later on.

Also got a surprise when the extension lead melted as I had it under the bar unknowingly. Luckily for the cut off safety switch!! Else I would not be here typing this!

Just spraying Kill Rust No. 2 and 3.

    I like it!!!!!
    Well done
Giving me lots of ideas, i was wondering do you reckon it might be strong enough to put jack stands under it?
I relise there would be a hell of alot of the cars weight on it, but that looks pretty solid
It would be handy if you could because i find it hard to find a spot to position jack stands when changing your front suspension (springs) when you need to let the axle hang it makes it hard
    Thanks for posting

It wouldnt suprise me if it could cope with the weight, but I never designed it to be for that. What I would do in your case is lift the disco from the radius arm connector on the chasis. Ive done this before with no probs at all. Mind you I needed to put bricks under the jack the get the height.

of course, once you've finished this bout of rover TLC, you'll need to test it all out....on the tracks
