As for the ECU installation, 3 screws and 2 plugs. This was already set up with generic injector codes and a Bell tune or map, so there was little required changing. A friend used his knowledge, Nanacom and PC to interegate the ECU and all that was requires was to change the accellerator type from the later ones to the earlier ones. What more can I say - the whole process takes minutes.

As for the TD5 in remore areas, I think this is the best motor (other than the 4BD1) which Land Rover have put into their 110's / 130's (I don't have any experience with the PUMA).

Shanon has been driving her TD5 Defender for about 4 years now in East Arnhem Land and has had few issues, other than things like brakes and wheel bearings, which both get a real hammering. Do the services / maintenance and keep the coolant correct and they are very reliable.

thanks - that does explain it - (I had somehow imagined that it was an after-market ECU)

Erich did you consider moving the ECU from under the seat to somewhere higher or have you "sealed" the seat box?

As others have already said, excellent work indeed!

I'm currently rebuilding a 110 for a round the world trip next year, and you have certainly given me a few ideas. I do like the all white look of your defender, but does all that shiny white plastic, chequer plate and front bar not cause a lot of glare for the driver on sunny days? Just curious...

Our current Defender is silver. The only glare I get is off the right side of the bull bar at night with the high beam on. Having said that, I find the blue dash high beam indicator light more annoying.

Sun glare off the paintwork isn't a problem with our silver car. Having said that, will let you know of such issues after we have deliver the car to our daughter.

Yes we have considered this - huge job. Also looked at pressurising, sealing, wrapping. I know these have been moved by others - just too hard.

Tombie2 did a post some time back with a pressurised ECU, looked very neat.

You would have to sink the car pretty deep to have a problem as the ECU sits up high in the under seat box.

The jury is still out on this one but I think time will beat us.

    Erich.

    Erich and Andrew,

I too would like to state my appreciation of this thread. It is great to see how with the the means, tools, knowhow and dedication a project like this can come together.

Not only will your daughter be appreciative of this vehicle but also all the avid watchers of this thread. Thank you for taking the time to photograph and write to share this project with the aulro community.

The tray removed and all welding completed - we hope - now painting but as per usual when we mention paint, it rains.

Can't wait to see the finished beast! You really have a tight deadline.

You should have painted everything in hammertone finish then you wouldn't have had an issue with rain spots
