hows your homemade turbo manifold going?
So has anybody on here got any idea what the maximum pressure i can use is with a defender TD5?
The maunal says 1.1 Bar (16 psi) but its been boosted and from my Nanocom i can see that the peak pressure is 1.22 Bar (17.7 psi) but under load it steadys out at about 1.16 Bar (16.8 psi).
Is this ok or do i need to drop it down? If its left running like this what effect will it have on fuel economy?
Many thanks for the help.
Pete.
It should be ok. On the Discos I think it will go as high as 19 psi before limp home mode will kick in. I stand to be corrected but it is higher than what you are seeing on your defender.
Fuel economy is determined by how much fuel is squirted into the pots, therefore I would not expect that it is having any detremental effects on fuel consumption unless you have had the ECU remapped. More air will help the EGT run cooler.
Link to Garrett website. This is the catalogue link available in 2 parts TurboByGarrett.com - catalog

Generally, have a good look over all the info they supply. Used this site for a few years now sourcing for replacement units.
Failing that, contact Honeywell themselves. Guys are pretty good and knowledgeable.

Hi, great job on the turbo conversion.
A friend of mine has done this conversion on a 300tdi bowler. I will see if I can get some pics uploaded.
When I mentioned this to him he did say he was having problems getting enough fuel through the standard pump and injectors even though they are all turned up to the max. from what i can understand the td5 turbo is producing too much air volume for the pump to keep up. I will try and find out if the turbo is standard td5 or breathed on.
Also are you planning on running an egt guage? in my limited experiance the 300 tends to suffer from high exhaust temps when played with. an oversize intercooler will help but not cure the problem.
good luck...
Hey,
I Would be interested to see what turbo your mate used and how he did the conversion. I have fixed a few little problems i have had and its running much better. I had the car dynoed about 18months ago and i think they over fueled it a bit too much and now it seems just right not much black smoke at full throttle but the EGT's can get high very quickly. I must say its a world of difference compared to the old turbo. I honestly didn't think it would make that bigger difference. I been having a bit of fun dragging ppl off at the lights :p something i hadn't done since a swapped from the V8. I still havnt taken it off road but I am hoping to go away very soon and really test it out! One thing i have noticed is i get full boost much quicker but at about the same rpm and it holds full boost a lot longer. It seems to like 4th gear a lot more too and doesn't always change down to 3rd when i give it some stick. The real test will be the long 100Kmh hills if i ever make it out of the city again :(
