    3801 A Legend In Steam

The library has become my one stop steam DVD place. Another very good Aussie steam DVD from the ABC archives 3801 a legend in steam. The following is from the sleeve notes.

In the golden age of steam,3801 was a triumph in design, construction and performance. The pacific Class 38s were among the finest examples of steam locomotives to come out of Australian workshops.

Now from ABC TV and the personal archives of cameraman and steam buff Jim Powe, this DVD presents the great event that made 3801 a legend.

-The famous record-breaking speed run from Sydney to Newcastle.
-The first unbroken steam run from Sydney to Melbourne.
-The incredible across-Australia-to-Perth run in 1970.
-The overhaul of 3801 in 1986.
-The full musical tribute 3801 performed by the railway group Chullora junction...and much more!

Locomotive 3801 began service with New South Wales Government Railways in 1943 and is still steaming in 2005.With special trips all over the continent in 1988 it became the focal point for railway celebrations to mark the bicentenary of white settlement in Australia.

I must admit i knew 3801 was a special lady but i never knew she was that special. This DVD gave me so much more respect for her and the people that built and ran her for all those years. The footage of the rebuild is amazing.

I know i say this after every DVD i post a description about but this is a must see for the rail fans.Has anyone got any stories or photos to share about this very special lady?

When I was a young fella back in the 1960's I remember the Newcastle Flyer which was pulled by a 38 class loco. They left Newcastle station and by the time they got to Wickham station which was the third station out from the Newcastle station ( I worked just behind there, it was my first job) they certainly had a head of steam up.

It was an impressive site as they thundered past, the shed I worked in would shake as it faced onto the railway line. They went through just before 5pm and as we knocked off work at 5pm it was a signal for us to down tools and get ready to go home.

Pleasant memories of the 38 class loco's.

My father in law was a fireman on the 3801 when it was called the Newcastle Flyer, he said that they use to have her doing well over 100 mph heading to Sydney if they were running late.
