There is only 1 museum. Steam on Sundays till Nov along the branch line.

They built a new flash centre to enter thru and called it Trainworks, plus built a service area at the back with a walkway. Always good for a visit. Cheers

Only driven past it - it looks great - very flash new buiding there. Certainly on my list of places to visit when I can, but as SWMBO would not be interested in the slightest, working it into my plans has been tricky.

Thanks guys. Yeah Trainworks does look flash on the internet. I was a bit confused when I looked at a map of Thirlmere and it gives what appears to be three museums.

I'll aim for Trainworks and take it from there.

You got it ..

The new building commences roughly where the old engine shed was .. so enter Trainworks, a bit like Powerhouse museum with everything nice and neat indoors. Then wander outdoors and thru the original sheltered area where the bulk of the collection is .. at the end of the covered area there is a turntable and a walkway around the roundhouse. The roundhouse typically holds the operating steam locos, no access to them unless you can get somebody to give you a tour. Lots and lots to see, so can kill a few hours quite easily.

If you follow the road past the museum for a couple of kms on the right is the turn off to Thirmele lakes. Was drying up a bit last time I was there but maybe worth a side visit.

Hope you enjoy it mate, there are a lot of history there and some very interesting locomotives. My must see list would include the M36 class No78 built 1877 (very similar to loco No1), E17 class Stevenson 0-6-0 No 18 built 1866 (one of the first goods engines on the NSWGR), X10 class 1021 "Cardiff" built 1916 and Z13 calss 1301 built 1877 as a 4-4-0 tender engine.
A great day out for the steam fanatic.
Jim, have you been to Newcastle museum to see 20N yet? well worth a visit to see a well preserved monument to our industrial beginnings.

Never met Dullbird, but we have an outstanding arrangement to have a cup of coffee, if (and when) I visit that area.

ps. Hey Robbo, haven't seen that loco yet, but it's on the bucket list.

It'd be a special trip for her - I don't think she goes to Bargo too often.
